the thing with Yagyuu is that he and Niou aren't identical, but they frequently mirror one another. where Niou becomes Yagyuu to show a more serious, refined side of himself, Yagyuu becomes Niou to release a wilder, more capricious side.
↑ you can almost say that they complete one another, in a way. (the cheesiest, I know, but-)
Yagyuu is, beneath the surface, unpredictable, dangerous, and dangerously repressed. being Niou allows him to express that side of himself, to ease the pressure of his own public face. that is, Niou's public face is Yagyuu's hidden self.
Niou is constantly changing because he doesn't like who he is. he tries on other faces and doesn't like them any better, because they don't fit. but Yagyuu's face fits some of what Niou wants to be: serious, dangerous, refined, clever, respectable.
more importantly than that, Yagyuu looks at Niou and sees that who Niou is is this person who can be anything he wants to be, anyone he wants to be. he sees Niou's potential.
being able to switch so convincingly means that

Niou comes from a fairly wealthy family; both of his parents are accomplished con artists, and much of their money comes back to their three kids. his father's favourite is a good investment scam; his mother's a fan of the long con. (Niou speculates that she may be a black widow, but there's no proof of that.)
his father grew up in a tiny rural town in the south; his name is Naoki and he's legitimately sweet. he looks out for Number One, mostly, but he seriously loves his kids. (his wife, too, but that's complicated.)
his mother was from a different small town further north; her name is Emi and she's actually kind of a bitch. she expects a lot from her children and her husband, and comes down pretty hard on them when they don't deliver. she's especially hard on Naoki himself, and on Masaharu, who takes after his father
