David
David was glad Pierre was with him because without being wrapped in his boyfriend’s arms, he surely would have fallen over. His legs felt like noodles, his eyes burned with the tears that were falling effortlessly from his eyes. Just two years ago, David could wake up and eat cereal with his two sisters and his parents… and now he would wake up to his boyfriend. Not that there was anything wrong with that, he loved Pierre with all of his heart… but his parents hated him and his sisters were dead. He had no family.
Well, that wasn’t entirely true… this baby was kind of his family… the one he and Pierre were watching through a glass window as she was hooked up to all kinds of tubes and things David didn’t understand as the doctors tried to keep her alive, being born five months premature…
It was a long shot, but everything inside of him clung to this baby’s life. She deserved to live.
Jeff
Jeff sat in the driver’s seat of his car and tossed his cap and gown on the seat beside him, headed for the after party. He put the key in the ignition and just before he was about to turn it, his cell started ringing. He looked at the screen and his brow creased. Why would Pierre be calling him now? Especially when he could have just texted him…
“Hello?” Jeff asked, a little confused.
“Um… hi Jeff…” Came the nervous voice of Pierre from the other side. “I think you need to come to the hospital… operating room 3, tell them you’re with Chloe. I’ll explain when you get here.” Pierre said, and it almost sounded like his voice… ripped. At the end. He was in pain. Jeff hung up and didn’t ask questions. Fuck the party, he rushed to the hospital as fast as he possibly could.
Jeff was surprised he didn’t get arrested the way he drove, but he got here. That’s what mattered. As he approached the desk, his heartbeat got faster and faster because he really didn’t know what was happening… he didn’t even know who Chloe was. It was a pretty name, but he didn’t know anyone by it…
“Um… hi, could you show me to operating room 3? I’m with Chloe…” He said nervously to the nurse behind the desk, and the atmosphere instantly shifted. Every nurse in the room instantly gave him guilty or apologetic looks, some of their eyes even filled with tears. But they gave him directions to the room anyways.
As he walked down the hall, he saw David and Pierre looking through a glass window and only got half way towards them before Pierre ran towards him, putting his hands on his shoulders, keeping Jeff in place, and away from whatever was through that window.
“Jeff… please don’t move until you let me explain.” Pierre said desperately, David standing just behind him looking at the ground.
Jeff’s eyes got wide, and honestly, he was terrified. But he nodded, letting Pierre explain. He kept his eyes planted on the ground and didn’t move until Pierre was completely finished talking. No matter how painful the words.
“W-well… Rayenna… she came in earlier today with birth complications, and she um… she flatlined.” Pierre paused, waiting for some reaction he wouldn’t get. Not until he finished talking.
“She didn’t make it… but the baby did.” He finished. Jeff let the words sink in, then realized what, or who, must be in that room. His head snapped up and he shoved Pierre to the side, gluing himself instantly to the window, and letting out loud sobs, banging his fists on the glass, and closing his eyes helplessly. His heart was crumbling, shattering, shaking, bursting. He was dying. He’d loved Rayenna. He didn’t even get a chance to tell her… and now she was gone. And his baby was in that room… lying there, connected to all of these lines that held her life. The life she shouldn’t even be living for four more months. The one she should be living with her mother.
Pierre
Watching Jeff, the sight of it brought tears to Pierre’s eyes. It was heartbreaking… but he held it together for David, who was falling apart all over again.
Everyone was falling apart… even Pierre found it hard not to break down. But he didn’t. He tried to appear strong, level-headed, and calm, because someone had to keep things together.
The doctors tried what seemed like hundreds of tests, and chords, and wires, and systems on Chloe, trying to keep her alive. It was a long shot, but they seemed to get her on some kind of life support that kept her asleep, but alive. They said if all went well, she could wake up in a few weeks and be ready to take home in about a month. Jeff insisted in staying at the hospital, but David and Pierre had gone home, where Pierre was holding David in bed while he cried.
As crazy as Rayenna was… Pierre couldn’t help but shed a tear or two himself. She was human after all, and deep down she really was a semi-okay person… and she was David’s sister. His second sister, who was now joining the first. The only family he had left hated him and that tore Pierre’s insides apart because he could feel David’s pain ripping through his chest. It was like David really was a part of him.
One of the many things Pierre loved about David was his inability to stay up all night crying. Late night tears could always pose as David’s lullaby, so as David drifted off to a sobbing sleep, Pierre allowed his own eyes to close, gently giving way to letting go of the pain, trauma, and tears that the day had brung.
Chuck
“I’m just worried about them I guess. I mean, David gets a text about the hospital, then him and Pierre run off in the middle of Pie’s graduation… it just doesn’t make sense.” Seb said sadly. Chuck placed a soft kiss on Seb’s head. He was worried about them too, but right now he had to comfort Seb so he pretended not to be.
“I’m sure they’re fine, but we’ll go over there tomorrow and find out what’s going on.” Chuck said soothingly. He could tell Seb didn’t believe him about not being worried, but regardless, Seb snuggled in closer and Chuck wrapped his arms even tighter around his boyfriend, who’s bed he was now cuddled in.
Chuck’s mom had given him permission to spend the night at Seb’s after he’d insisted that nothing R rated would happen between them, since Seb’s mom was going to be there who was still in the dark about her son’s sexuality. Of course this wasn’t entirely true. Seb’s mom had gone to sleep at 8:30 and she slept like a rock. But still, out of respect for his mother and the fact that she had even let him come tonight, they did nothing more than kiss and cuddle and the only time any clothes left their body was to change into Pyjamas. And that was okay. It didn’t bother him not having sex with Seb. In fact, even if his mom had approved it, he probably still wouldn’t. After all they had just started dating a few days ago. Actually, a few days ago he didn’t even know he liked guys let alone liked Seb, and everything was moving really fast. He was okay with things moving quickly because when it came down to it, he’d been best friends with Seb his whole life, and knew him better than anyone. But he didn’t quite know him that well in that way, so didn’t want to take that leap yet.
He was already confused about so much, and now all this drama with whatever was going on with Pierre and David…
Chuck shook the thought from his mind. He would never get any sleep if he kept thinking about this. He wrapped his arms tight around his boyfriend and allowed himself to drift off to sleep with him.
Jeff
When Jeff’s eyes opened, he was in pain. His muscles and bones ached everywhere. Then he realized, it was because he was sleeping on a hard floor.
Then it hit him like a ton of bricks. Everything from the day before… and he knew he was on the hospital floor. Jeff jumped to his feet, then staggered and fell back down with the pressure of everything going on his head.
“Whoa now sweetie, you need to take things easy…” Said a nurse who seemed to appear out of nowhere, handing him a glass of water to sip on. Oh yes… now he remembered her. Remember fighting her to stay outside the room his daughter was in. He leaned his head back against the wall, just below the glass window leading to Chloe. His heart broke thinking about her… about Rayenna. Tears began to fall once again and he sipped on his water. How? How could this happen…
The only time Jeff left the window all morning was to eat or go to the bathroom, besides that he rotated from sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall, and standing just watching her… she was beautiful, even in her condition. Just like her mother. Flawless. Broken… maybe in need of a little help… but beautiful and flawless nonetheless.
He knew Chloe was going to make it, and yeah, it still hurt him that she was in this condition… but really, he knew what was breaking his heart when he looked at that little girl, was how much she reminded him of Rayenna.
He’d never really even gotten the chance to tell her everything he’d been feeling, and then she was just gone…
Gone. He tried to wrap his mind around the idea…
The idea of the love of his life…
Being gone.
And he broke down.
He knew what he had to do.
David
When David woke up, he could still feel the sting of the tears from the night before. The thoughts of what had happened didn’t hit him, because they’d never left. He’d had nightmares about it all night long. The thoughts just haunted him.  Thoughts of Rayenna… and Emaa… and Chloe… why was this happening?! None f them deserved it! None of them deserved the lives they’d been given and it wasn’t fair. He just didn’t understand. David wrapped his arms around Pierre’s shirtless body and cuddled up to him, who was still asleep. He just let himself cry for awhile, until Pie was awake.
He knew Pierre was awake, even though he didn’t say a word, by the kiss on the head, followed by being wrapped tighter into his arms. David sniffed and wiped away his tears, sitting up. Pie sat up with him to hear what he had to say.
“Let’s go eat and shower. I want to get to the hospital and see Jeff and Chloe.” David said without smiling. He really didn’t feel like smiling. It’s like he could see the sadness clouding his vision and he was sure it rang through in his eyes when other people looked at him. But he didn’t care. He had the right to be sad right now.
“David, are you sure you’re up for that so early in the morning?” Pierre asked, looking at him like he was a small child getting ready to sleep with the door closed and lights off to prove a point, even though he was afraid of the dark. That wasn’t acceptable. David hated that. He wasn’t a child and he could make his own decisions. He’d done this once before and just because he’d lost his sister, yes that made him more vulnerable right now but that didn’t change who he was.
“Yes Pierre, I’m sure. I can make my own decisions and I don’t know what’s good for me any less than I did before, so drop the pity act.” David said, throwing back the covers and leaving the room, and Pierre, looking stunned and guilty.
David was mad at Pierre. Really mad. But he knew deep down, he was just taking out his anger at everything on Pierre. And that wasn’t fair. So he made his way to the kitchen and made breakfast for them, and Pierre walked in slowly just as he was almost finished cooking.
David turned around to see Pierre leaning in the doorway.
“You okay?” He asked. David felt pressure on his heart, but held it in. He wouldn’t let Pierre know how much he was really hurting.
“Yeah, I’m fine…” He said, turning to finish breakfast. He heard Pierre cross the room, then felt strong warm hands turning him, and wrapping him into his boyfriend’s arms and chest.
“You’re not fine David. And that’s okay. As long as I’m here, you don’t have to be. I’ll be fine enough for the both of us.” Pierre said sweetly, and David could have cried again right there. But he didn’t want to. He’d done enough crying for now, and he was sure to be crying again later. So he took the conversation in a whole different direction.
He pulled away from Pierre’s arms and looked him up and down noticeably. (he still wasn’t wearing a shirt)
Pierre
“Oh trust me… you are.” He said suggestively with a devious smile. Pierre got the message loud and clear and smiled suggestively down at David before bringing his hands down to lift David up, who wrapped his legs firmly around his boyfriend’s waist and kissed him passionately, feeling it in every part of his body. Pierre kept one hand planted firmly on David’s ass, supporting him as he moved the other to David’s pyjama pants to rub the already hard front of them, and carried David in towards the bedroom, completely forgetting about the food that was still frying on the stove. Pierre didn’t move his hand or stop rubbing except to close the door, and set David down on the bed, climbing on top of him and kissing him more until two small hands pushed him off and onto his back beside his boyfriend. He worried for a second that David didn’t want this like he thought he did, only to be reassured when David (who wasn’t wearing boxers) pulled off his pyjama pants and threw them to the floor, climbing on top of Pierre and kissing him as much as he could while rubbing his crotch on the cloth of Pierre’s PJ pants.
David
David could feel Pierre getting harder and took the liberty of pulling down his pants, as Pierre kicked them off the rest of the way... David rubbed their dicks together for a few seconds before pumping them both with his hands. He could hear Pierre’s voice getting rough and louder and stopped what he was doing, leaned down, and started making out with Pierre while blindly reaching over to the nightstand to find the tube of lubricant. He didn’t leave Pierre’s lips until he had some in his hand and was spreading it on his boyfriend’s hard-on and positioning himself on top of Pierre. He slowly lowered his body until he was about a quarter of the way down when he came back up, and lowered himself a little more, and more, then up, and more, until he was basically sitting on Pierre. Then went up, and thrusting himself down hard, feeling a hand wrap around his dick just as his boyfriend’s hit his prostate and they both cried out in pleasure. Pierre started pumping David hard and fast as David did the same for him, just… in a different way. They kept going, and when both of their pleasure got more audible, they knew it was almost time, and before he knew it, Pierre had climaxed in David’s ass, and David was spilling over Pierre’s hand as they both softened, and David climbed off, falling down beside his boyfriend, both panting. David was about to speak up and tell Pierre how much he loved him, but just as he opened his mouth, he smelled something… it smelt like something was… burning? David and Pierre looked at each other panicked, and he knew Pie smelt it too, so they both grabbed their pj pants off the floor and rushed out of the bedroom… only to be stopped at the door by a thick cloud of smoke.
David’s heart sped to a mile a minute and he rushed to pull on his pants and dropped to the floor, feeling Pierre pull him close to his side, both of them crawling under the smoke as they could see the flames progressing towards them. With his nose filling with soot and smoke, burning him from the inside out, David, terrified and unthinking, took a deep breath in to try and talk to Pierre and his lungs instantly flooded with smoke. His eyes widened and filled with tears as he started hacking, coughing up smoke and blood (from how strong he was coughing) and he was terrified. He had practically accepted his death, when Pierre’s strong arms wrapped around him and ran him out of the building so fast, the speed could come from nothing less than an adrenaline rush. He dropped to the floor and rolled onto his side, curling up and coughing more. But it wasn’t over yet.
Before he had time to even think, Pierre had slung him over his shoulder and was rushing out of the building, where he could hear sirens already on their way to the apartment. Another strong hack sent blood spewing all over Pierre’s back, and the sidewalk, and David blacked out.
Pierre
As Pierre sat, rocking Chloe in one arm, and holding David’s hand with the other, the weight of what he’d done really started to hit him…
What would David say? Especially as Pierre would spring this on him the second he would wake…
It’d been two weeks since the fire. David had been comatose since then but the doctor’s were sure he’d wake up either today or tomorrow. In the meantime, Pierre had got them somewhat rehabilitated, talking to different programs and support groups, explaining about the fire, and with the help of his insurance, and some guilt money from his parents, who he’d called briefly for that purpose, he’d managed to replace, repair, or salvage most of their belongings. And picking up some extra shifts at work, he’d managed to be keeping up a hotel bill for them to live in until they found a place, which all depended on David’s thoughts on his idea. And then there was the matter of the sick little girl in his arms. He looked down into her eyes. She really was beautiful…
But even so, how would he tell David that Jeff had disappeared in the middle of the night, leaving nothing but a note saying he couldn’t raise a child on his own and he was ashamed of his choices. How would he tell David that in order to prevent his niece from going into the system, he’d volunteered them to adopt her? How would he tell David that in order for that to be possible, they had get married? There was just so much to handle at once, all on top of his injuries, and his sister’s death…
