Summary: AU!Zombies. Yuto had been at school when it all happened, and now, he and the other survivors are just trying to stay alive.
He had been at school when it all happened, walking through the hallways with his friends. They were heading towards the soccer field, excited for an impromptu game, when a shrill scream stopped them in their tracks.
It was their friend, Suzuka, running through the field with a bad limp, and a few of their classmates chasing after her. He dropped his bag on the ground and was ready to go help her, when he felt a hand around his arm, holding him back.
"Yuto," Shida said, her voice breaking as she stared up at him with frightened eyes, "Yuto, there's something wrong here, they don't look normal."
He turned back towards the field, and could see that Mirai was right; the students chasing Suzuka were stumbling, their mouths hanging open as if they were...
Hungry.
"Let's get out of here," Yugo said from behind them, half of the group following him and the other half staying, debating, looking at their friends retreating backs and then over towards Suzuka, who was now climbing the fence, but he could see that the pain in her leg was holding her back.
"I got to help her," he said, shaking Mirai's hand off of him. He ran across the field, noting the sounds of footsteps following behind him, and the group reached Suzuka and the people surrounding her, trying to attack her.
He could hear the others gasp, himself included, when they saw the attacker's faces. He couldn't recognize the students, they were probably first years, but there was something horribly wrong with them. Their faces were, blank, and not blank in the sense of stupidity or absent-mindedness, but blank as if they were, well, as if they were dead.
But they weren't dead, they were moving around and they were now attacking them, and he drew his fist back and punched one of them in the jaw, screaming in shock when the bone easily broke under his fist and detached itself from the student's mouth.
"What is this?" Yuma screamed, looking at him frantically as he kicked another student in the chest, "Yuto, what-"
"I don't know!" he shouted back, running a nervous hand through his hair, his eyes surveying the scene. The students he and Yuma had attacked were on the ground, not knocked out but just floundering around, as if in a daze. Mirai was fighting with a girl student, and he couldn't help but grin when Mirai socked the girl in the face, sending her flying to the ground. Last, there was Umika, ripping off a piece of her sweater and wrapping it around Suzuka's wound, who was sweating profusely, her eyes unfocusing as she swayed back and forth.
"Suzuka," he began to say, but before he could even blink, Suzuka was springing forward and biting Umika, tearing a small chunk out of her shoulder. Umika screamed, her hands covering the bloody mess as she stumbled backwards, falling onto her behind. Suzuka was on her again, biting her other shoulder and he watched, unable to get his legs to move, even when the other students began to bite her too.
"Fuck!" Yuma cursed, and Mirai began to cry, her hands in her hair as she shook. Coming out of his shock, he grabbed Mirai's hand and Yuma's. "Let's get out of here, we got to find help!" he shouted as they ran out of the field and back into the school, rushing through the hallways.
It was quiet, eerily quiet as their steps resounded through the hallways. Soon enough they were exiting the school, but were once again stopped in their tracks, looking at the streets in front of them in horror.
It was complete chaos; students were attacking the elderly, the elderly were attacking the salary men, the salary men were attacking the students, and everything in between. There were bodies scattered throughout the street as well, some dead, some still being eaten, and he swallowed the bile that came rising up his throat.
"I've got to make sure my family is okay," Mirai said quietly, still shaking, "I've…this is-" she let out a sob, running off. Yuma called out to her but she kept running, and soon he was following her, dodging the bodies in the streets.
He would have gone with them, terrified to be on his own right now, but he wanted to make sure his family was okay too. He ran home, ignoring the sharp pain in his legs and the burning in his chest as he struggled to breathe. When he arrived, he threw open the door and locked it, barricading it with a chair.
"Mom, Dad!" he called out, dashing through the house, "Raiya!"
He stopped in the kitchen, his eyes landing on a note on the counter. Picking it up, he read it out loud to himself, sliding to the floor as he did.
"Yuto, your Mom and I decided it would be fun to take Raiya to the park today. We'll probably be home by the time you get there, but just in case we're not, can you take the chicken out of the freezer so it can defrost for dinner? See you, Dad."
He sighed, burying his face in his hands as the events of the day caught up with him. Shaking, he wiped away his tears and took in a shuddery breath, trying to make sense of anything, but coming up empty.
He'd just have to wait until his family came home.
He glanced at the clock, seeing it was already 5 pm.
"They'll be here," he reassured himself, smiling as he nodded, "They'll be here, and it'll be okay."
