prequel chapter one “Am I doing this right?” Yuto asked, glancing over his shoulder at Keito. The rifle felt heavy in his hands, and awkward as hell to hold with his broken wrist, which also happened to be the hand he’d have to pull the trigger with; thankfully, he had taken a few painkillers before their shooting session, otherwise he’d probably be screaming in pain right now.
His wrist was not healing well, even after Keito managed to find a brace for it during one of his ventures outside. The bone was crooked, and Yuto figured he’d probably need surgery or something to get it back in place. That wasn’t an option though, and so he did the best with what he had.
“Yeah, that’s good,” Keito came up behind him and rested a hand on his lower back, leaning over his shoulder. “See that spot on the fence? Try and aim for that.”
Yuto lowered the rifle and focused on the spot ahead, pulling the trigger. The noise shot through the air and scared a few birds away, but Yuto paid them no mind as he stared ahead in amazement, smiling big at the hole in the fence.
“You got it!” Keito hugged him from behind and laughed, “You’re getting better every time, I swear!”
“Thanks,” Yuto leaned back into the touch, holding the gun with his good hand as he continued to stare at the fence. It had been his target practice for the past two weeks, and Yuto could clearly see that his aim was getting better.
“This is so weird,” Yuto mumbled, finally turning around and embracing Keito, careful to not jostle his wrist as he looped his arms around the boy’s neck. “Three months ago I was a normal kid, and now I’m learning how to shoot in order to survive. Fucking weird.”
Keito chuckled dryly, brushing Yuto’s dirty bangs out of his eyes. “How many days has it been since we last showered?”
Yuto thought for a moment, “Um, four or five, not sure.”
“That should be good, c’mon,” Keito grabbed his hand and led him back into the house. Tossing the rifle back onto the couch, the two boys walked upstairs and collected some relatively clean clothes, before going into the bathroom.
Getting under the hot water with Keito, Yuto couldn’t help but let his mind wander as Keito’s fingers caressed his back, thinking back to three months ago when he had been a little in love with Mirai. She was the perfect girl after all, beautiful and soft, but with a fierce personality and attitude that set her apart from the other girls at his school.
Now, he was having romantic feelings for Keito, a boy, although he wondered how much of his feelings were genuine. There was always a desperation to their kisses, as if they were trying to find some normalcy in this fucked up world, something they could call real besides killing these things that now walked the streets.
Feeling the water shut off, Yuto shook himself out of his thoughts and grabbed their towels, wrapping one around his waist before turning to Keito, drying his hair first, and then moving the towel down his arms, chest, legs and everywhere else, liking the way Keito’s breath hitched when his hand brushed across his thigh.
Leaving the bathroom, Yuto dropped his towel as Keito kissed him firmly on the mouth, leading him into the bedroom they shared and onto the bed, their fucked up lives forgotten for awhile as they lost themselves within each others bodies.

“We’re almost out of water,” Keito ran a hand through his still damp hair, looking tired and worn out. “And vitamins. I’ll have to go out soon, it seems.”
“You mean we’ll have to go out soon,” Yuto responded, giving Keito an annoyed look when the other shook his head no. “C’mon, it’s not fair that you’re doing all the work. I’ve got a good shot now, let me come with you.”
Keito sighed, “Alright, but you follow my lead, okay? Anything I tell you to do, you do, got it?”
“Aye aye captain,” Yuto rolled his eyes, grabbing a fiber bar off the counter and heading into the living room, satisfied that’d he finally be helping out.
The next day, the boys woke up early as they prepared to leave, Keito loading the guns while Yuto re-filled the gas in the car, mentally thanking Keito once again for thinking ahead and stocking up before all the pumps went dry. Tossing the empty jug onto the ground, Yuto got in the passenger seat just as Keito left the house, a pistol in one hand and a rifle in the other.
Getting inside the car, Keito handed Yuto the rifle before starting the engine, pulling away from the curb and back towards the city.
They found a super market that looked pretty abandoned in Shibuya, but they were still cautious, quietly getting out of the car and running as quietly as they could into the store. Wasting no time, Yuto collected all the water cases he could find while Keito grabbed bottles and bottles of vitamins, the two meeting back at the front of the store when they were done.
“I’m surprised, I can’t believe there’s nothing here,” Keito mumbled, looking paranoid as he kept glancing over his shoulder. “Whatever, let’s just get the hell out of here.”
The two left, dashing back towards the car and loading the trunk with their new findings. Before they got in though, a loud scream erupted through the air, followed by a series of shots. Without thinking, Yuto ran towards the noise, ignoring Keito’s scream for him to come back.
Turning the corner where it seemed to come from, Yuto stopped, staring at the mass of corpses ahead, and the small boy who was trying to outrun them with a bad leg. Hurrying forward, Yuto caught up with the boy and picked him up, narrowly avoiding being grabbed by one of the bodies. He ran as fast as he could back towards Keito, holding on tight to the boy who was clinging to him in fright.
“Start the car!” Yuto screamed when Keito came into view, and the boy quickly jumped back inside and gunned the engine, pulling forward and meeting Yuto halfway. Getting into the car with the boy in his lap, Yuto sighed in relief as they drove away from the mass.
“I haven’t been bitten, just so you know,” the boy interrupted the tense silence, and Yuto looked away from Keito’s furious face and back towards the boy. “I cut my leg hopping a fence, trying to get away from them.”
“Okay,” Yuto tried to smile for the boy, but felt like he was about to throw up any second. That had been intense, running into a mob of those things; he didn’t even know if he’d be able to save the boy, and the thought that he could be dead right now scared him.
“My name is Yamada,” the boy said, “But you can call me Ryosuke.”
“Hi Ryosuke, I’m Yuto, and this is Keito,” Yuto said, pointing over to Keito, who merely nodded his head and kept his eyes trained on the road. “How old are you, Ryosuke?”
“Seventeen.” Yuto blinked his eyes in surprise; the boy didn’t look seventeen, despite his lightly colored hair. “Keito and I are seventeen too,” he said, rubbing the boy’s back and smiling a little when Ryosuke relaxed beside him. A familiar feeling washed over him as this happened, and Yuto found himself reminded of Raiya, who he tried not to think about too often.
He continued to comfort the small boy, resting his cheek against the top of Ryosuke’s head when they pulled up to the house. Picking him up again, Keito opened the door for the two and they got Ryosuke inside, where Yuto inspected his injured leg. Thankfully, the cut didn’t need stitches, so Yuto cleaned it and bandaged it, before leaving the room to go talk to Keito.
After searching around for a bit, Yuto eventually found Keito in their room, sitting on the bed with his head in his hands. Joining him, Yuto sighed and waited for Keito to start lashing out at him.
No screams came though, or any physical hits. Keito cried as he pulled Yuto into a fierce kiss, clinging to him the way Ryosuke had earlier, terrified and never wanting to let go. “I’m sorry I scared you,” Yuto apologized in between kisses, wiping away Keito’s tears as he pushed the boy back onto the bed.
“You could’ve died,” Keito choked out as Yuto removed his shirt, pressing kisses along the smooth skin, careful to avoid the bruises. “You can’t die, I, I need you.”
“I need you too,” Yuto said, and he realized with a start the weight of that sentence. This was no longer just some excuse for human contact and rationalization; this was something more, something genuine, and when Keito whispered, “I love you,” after they had finished, Yuto kissed the boy softly in response and said, “I love you too.”

Yuto smiled as Ryosuke sang for him, his head resting in the boy’s lap. Keito sat beside them, his feet curled up under his legs as he strummed from the guitar he had found in the attic of the house.
It had been a week since Ryosuke joined their group, and he was fitting in quite nicely. He was also very good with a gun, which surprised Keito and Yuto, when the two took him shooting out back and he easily shot a bird that was flying overhead.
All of the sudden, Ryosuke stopped singing, and Yuto looked up in confusion when he saw the alarm on the boy’s face. “I heard something,” he whispered, looking in the direction of the front door.
Setting down the guitar, Keito grabbed a shotgun and inched towards the door, the gun raised and ready to shoot. A quiet moment passed, and then they all heard it, a small knock on the door. Biting his lip, Keito turned the knob and opened the door, quickly raising the gun again as it inched opened.
“Oh my god!” Ryosuke ran towards the door and hugged one of the boys on the other side, who groaned in pain at the contact. “Sorry, sorry,” Ryosuke helped the boy in, the other boy stumbling along after them and falling into Keito’s arms.
“We saw the candle light, and hoped somebody might be here,” the boy in Keito’s arms said, his voice hoarse and blood dripping down the side of his face. The other boy, who was now sitting on the floor as Ryosuke ran to get the first aid kit, coughed and hacked up a small bit of blood.
“Have either of you been bitten?” Keito asked, and both boys shook their head, the one in Keito’s arms saying, “Yuri fell asleep while driving, and we crashed into a house a few blocks away.”
Ryosuke returned, laying the first aid kit on the floor as he began to clean Yuri’s wounds. Keito helped the other boy, trying to pop his shoulder back into place while Yuto stitched the cut in his forehead, hoping the shock of blood loss was numbing the pain.
When they were done, they helped the boys upstairs and into a spare room, where Ryosuke took first watch to make sure nothing happened while they slept.
As soon as they were downstairs and washing the blood of their hands, Keito said to Yuto, “Those two aren’t going to make it without proper medical attention. We got to find a doctor.”
“How?” Yuto asked, drying his hands off, “Finding a doctor in this mess is like, finding a needle in a damn haystack.”
“Well, I’ve been thinking,” Keito leaned against the counter, “Out here in Chiba, the population of those things isn’t too bad, right? But out in Shibuya, they’re practically everywhere.”
Yuto slowly nodded.
“So, what if the problem isn’t too bad in other small areas, especially in the small towns. We could find other people who survived, and maybe one of them will be a doctor.”
“It’s…possible,” Yuto said, resting his body against Keito’s as he hugged the other boy. “But what if we drive out there and it’s completely empty, or infested?”
“Then we turn around and come back here, I suppose,” Keito shrugged, brushing his lips against Yuto’s. “It’s worth a shot though, right?”
