prequel chapter one chapter two chapter three “How many fingers am I holding up?” Yuya asked Ryutaro, who was sitting in between Yuri’s legs, his back pressed against the boy’s chest. Ryutaro, despite looking exhausted and slightly queasy, rolled his eyes and answered, “Three.”
“Good,” Yuya put down his hands, and then pointed across the room at Kei, “What color shirt is he wearing?”
“Well, that’s debatable,” Ryutaro replied, his tone sarcastic, “I’d say that shirt was purple, but Kei might argue with me and say that it’s not purple, but a more maroon-ish tone.”
Kei snorted, nodding his head as he gave Ryutaro a thumbs up.
“Just making sure all of your senses are working, gosh, kids these days,” Yuya sighed, but with a smile on his face, relieved (as they all were) that Ryutaro was going to be okay; his senses seemed to be in working order, able to comprehend and answer all the questions that Yuya asked him. The only problem was his motor skills, and that Ryutaro had trouble walking after awhile. Yuya couldn’t tell if this problem was temporary or permanent, not without the use of an X-Ray machine. They didn’t have one of those though, and so he did his best to work with the younger boy using physical therapy, and building up Ryutaro’s muscles.
At first, Yuto had thought that Yuya was a bit abrasive, but after getting to know the older boy, could see that he was very kind and easy-going. A bit childish, as well, which is probably why he got along so well with their group. Hikaru as well, who, like Yuto, enjoyed being the mood makers of the group and trying to get people to smile.
Kei, the slightly more mature one, was just as Yuto thought he was; really, really weird. Not in a bad way though, just that he was extremely random at times and said the oddest things. He was nice though, and very thoughtful. So was Daiki, although he could get pretty mean when teased about his height, something which Ryutaro took great pleasure in, especially since the older boy couldn’t beat him up or anything. Watching their arguments was pretty fun, and gave everyone a good laugh.
Well, everyone but Kota, who seemed emotionless in Yuto’s opinion. Keito figured there must be some reason for his detachment to the world, and Yuto wondered what it was; he felt awkward prying into the boy’s life, especially after Kota allowed them to stay here. Still, his curiosity and concern was gnawing away at him, and so while Keito, Ryosuke, Kota and Hikaru were out collecting food, Yuto approached Kei.
“Hey, can I ask you something?” Yuto asked, casting a glance over his shoulder at the others; Yuri and Ryutaro were talking quietly, the injured boy’s head resting in Yuri’s lap, and Yuya was asleep on the floor, snoring quietly.
“Sure, what’s up?” Kei smiled, gesturing for Yuto to take a seat.
He did, while asking, “Well, I was wondering what’s up with Kota. He’s really…” Yuto struggled to find the right word, not wanting to sound like a jerk, “Not emotionally all there.”
Yuto resisted the urge to smack himself, and was thankful that Kei started to laugh, having taken no offense to his tactlessness. “I know, he wasn’t always like that though. It’s just hard, living in this reality.”
“Well, yeah, but the rest of you are alright,” Yuto argued, “Did something really bad happen to Kota, or something?”
Kei sighed, running a tired hand through his hair, “Yeah, something did. He and Daiki were out trying to find water, when they ran into them. They were children though…evil, blood thirsty children, but children nonetheless. I think it really broke Kota when they had to kill them.”
“Fuck,” Yuto swore, shaking his head; he and Keito had run into that problem before, but he couldn’t make himself shoot them. His thoughts would immediately turn to Raiya, and he’d just choke up, almost ready to cry. He didn’t know if his little brother became one of those, but it was entirely too possible, and the idea of someone killing his little brother, of him killing someone’s child or sibling, was just unthinkable, un-doable.
“Yeah, since then, Kota has been basically dead inside,” Kei stopped, cleared his throat, and then said, “Although, he’s been a little different since you five arrived. Maybe you guys can help us bring Kota back. I know it’ll mean the world to Hikaru,” Kei trailed off, looking out the window and into the street.
Yuto looked over and saw that the group was back. Getting up, he waited for Keito and Ryosuke to enter the room before running over, bringing them into a fierce hug; he did this every time, always thankful that they were alive and safe. Even though both had an excellent shot and will to survive, Yuto still worried himself sick over them, every time they left. He did for the others, of course, but these two were special to them. He had been with them the longest, and they had both seen him at his lowest, as he had with them.
“Glad you two are ok,” Yuto kissed Keito first, and then Ryosuke, kissing the boy on the forehead, “Find anything good?”
Ryosuke smiled and held up a bag of candy, “We found gummies and chocolate and lollipops. I am so excited!”
“Awe, so cute!” Yuto pinched Ryosuke’s squishy cheek, laughing at the squeak the boy let out.
“What about me, aren’t I cuuuute?” Hikaru pouted, pushing Keito and Ryosuke aside.
“Oh, I don’t know,” Yuto cracked up, pinching the sides of Hikaru’s face and stretching them out. The older boy yelped and pushed him away, giggling as well. “Come back Hika, I want to hug you,” Yuto began to chase the other around the room, much to the amusement of everyone else.
Except Kota, who didn’t even crack a smile.
Without really thinking, Yuto lunged at the oldest member of their group and began to tickle his sides. Kota tried to shove him off, but Yuto clung on, eventually bringing the two of them down to the floor, where he straddled Kota, fiercely attacking his sides.
“Damnit, Yuto, stop,” Kota squirmed, a smile tugging at his lips. Seeing that he was almost there, Yuto doubled his efforts and blew a loud raspberry on the boy’s neck.
The effect was immediate, Kota laughing hysterically, even after Yuto stopped attacking him. Rolling off of the boy and onto his side, Yuto hugged Kota as he laugh, who hugged him back, while promising to kill him in his sleep.
“That’s okay, as long as you keep laughing,” Yuto said, patting Kota on the head.

It took a bit of effort, and many tickle attacks, but Yuto was happy to see that Kota was finally starting to act like a human again. Hikaru too, who hugged Yuto before bed one night, tears in his eyes as he thanked the boy; Kei had mentioned to him once, that Hikaru would love to see Kota happy again. He had no idea what their relationship was like, but based on Kei’s hint and Hikaru’s gratitude, he reckoned it must have been a lot like Keito’s and his.
Same with Yuya and Daiki, which surprised him at first. The two were always teasing each other, but when they thought no one was looking, would exchange soft looks and gentle kisses. He felt bad catching them, since it was obvious they wanted to keep their affair a secret, but Keito reassured him it was fine, as he had caught the two more times than he cared to share.
Yuri and Ryutaro were obviously together, although no one had ever caught them acting like a couple. Their relationship could be written off as just friendship, but there was definitely something there; a fierce dependency, and an easiness around each other that only came with love.
The only people in the group who weren’t paired off were Kei and Ryosuke, and the two seemed more than okay with that. Like Ryosuke had said, “Just because all this shit happened, doesn’t mean I need to go have sex with someone to pass the time, or fall in love. It works for you guys though,” he shrugged, sitting on their bottom bunk and sucking on a lollipop. “I’m just not interested. Kei is really pretty though, huh?”
“Ridiculously pretty,” Keito nodded, looking at Yuto apologetically, “Sorry, but I can’t lie, he’s probably the prettiest person, boy or girl, I’ve ever met.”
“No apologies needed,” Yuto chuckled, “If you weren’t here, I’d totally try and hit that.”
“Oi!” Keito shouted, tackling Yuto to the bed and mock punching him in the stomach. Ryosuke joined in a second later, laughing shrilly when the two turned on him and began tickling him, Keito sitting on his waist while Yuto attacked his toes.

It had been nearly fourth months since everything happened, and if someone had told Yuto that he would survive, find a new family and someone to love, he’d probably laugh in their face. Here he was though, eating candy with the others by candle light, listening to a story from Kei’s college days, and cuddled up with Keito and Ryosuke, the small boy sitting in his lap and Keito’s head leaning on his shoulder.
Kota and Hikaru were sitting close, Kei next to them. Yuya and Daiki were sprawled out on the floor, their fingers nearly touching. Across from them, Ryutaro was asleep in Yuri’s lap, who was stroking his hair, his attention focused on Kei with a smile.
This, whatever it was, was good in Yuto’s eyes, and although he missed his former life dearly, this new one wasn’t too horrible to endure; especially with these guys by his side.
