It all started with a smile, as most love stories do, but not the kind that makes your heart stop in it’s radiant beauty. It was just a simple smile, thrown carelessly over his tanned shoulder. It didn’t cause his breath to shorten, or his vision to blur, but it still had an effect on him.
He began to think about that smile all the time, imagining it in his mind, wondering if he ever bring a smile like that to the other’s face. It wouldn’t be hard, really, he could simply say hello and the older boy would smile down at him, his lips closed but his still happy and warm.
So, that’s what he began to do, much to Chinen’s amusement who teased him relentlessly about his crush. It wasn’t a crush though, it was a necessity, he had to see the smile in order to smile himself, to feel good and fuzzy and at peace with the world. He did little things in order to achieve his goal, like buy snacks for him after school on his way to practice, fill up his water bottle when he was too lazy to do so, even let him borrow his too small clothes when the other members stole his. Everything he did for the older boy earned him a smile, and it made him happy.
Eventually though, and to no surprise, his odd intentions became obvious to the other boy, who cornered him after practice one day, backing him into a wall, his hands placed on either side of his head.
“You like me,” he said easily, a more brilliant smile spread across his face and eyes crinkled in amusement.
“Yeah,” he replied, heart thumping and mouth going dry from nerves, and that’s when he realized that this wasn’t so simple, because he really, genuinely liked the older boy who had five years on him, and he had the power to either make his dreams come true or to crush his heart.
“Why are you so nervous?” he asked, leaning closer, his breath tickling the other’s cheek, “Do you really think I could never possibly like you back?”
“You have better options,” he said, unsure, his thoughts becoming fuzzy by the close proximity of the other’s lips and the hidden meanings behind his words. He starred at the older boy, almost directly into his eyes, and asked, “Do you like me?”
“Yes,” he answered, and one little word had never sounded so good to his hears, and their first kiss, just a small brush of lips with their eyes closed, made him fall unexpectedly, suddenly, and perfectly in love with the older boy.
And it all started out so simple.
