Holding his head in his hands, Hikaru leaned against the wall and let gravity drag him down, concentrating solely on taking deep breaths and not punching something, or specifically, someone. He just couldn’t take it anymore, all this second guessing and insecurities clouding his mind, making it feel like his head could explode any second.
Hikaru needed to get over him, and fast, but he had no idea how. When he first met Keito, he didn’t like the boy very much; he was too shy, too quiet, couldn’t dance and in his opinion, couldn’t sing very well either. The only thing Hikaru liked about him was his guitar, and his ability to manipulate those strings into beautiful sounds.
As time went on though, Hikaru began to like Keito for more than just his talented hands, he came to admire the younger boy’s determination; practicing their dances until he physically couldn’t do it anymore, trying to become more fluent in Japanese and working hard to memorize the written characters he had forgotten while in England, and doing all of this, and more, while trying to deal with the emotional duress of his parents divorce.
Keito was a strong boy, stronger than Hikaru could ever be, and although he was still too shy and too quiet, Hikaru came to like those things too. He liked almost everything about Keito, except one thing.
The damn boy just couldn’t seem to make up his mind!
Over the years, Hikaru has shared a lot of special moments with Keito; tickle fights and late night jam sessions and sneaking into each other’s hotel rooms while on tour. Each moment meant something special to Hikaru, and for awhile there, he was beginning to think they meant something to Keito too, until Takaki came along.
Hikaru was always a bit a lot jealous of Yuto and his close friendship with Keito, but he knew they were just best friends, and if Yamada could handle their relationship, then he could too. He never expected Takaki and Keito to bond though, and the first time he heard about Keito going over to Takaki’s house and cleaning his room for him, a sharp pang of jealously hit him in the chest, bringing envious tears to his eyes.
Wasn’t that something only couples did for each other? He remembers asking Inoo this question, and feeling very crushed when his friend gave him a sympathetic look, pulling him into a one-armed hug.
For the longest time, Hikaru had hoped that maybe Keito would return his feelings, but now, he wasn’t so sure. It seemed that with each passing day, Takaki and Keito grew closer, and his feelings for the boy grew more one-sided by the minute.
It was time to get over Keito.
If only it was that easy though.
Sighing, Hikaru got up and made his way to the nearest restroom. Pushing the door open, Hikaru walked towards the sinks and turned one on, bending over to splash his face. When he was done, he turned the sink off and grabbed a paper towel from the dispenser, drying his face.
From behind him, he could hear the restroom door swinging open. Throwing away the paper towel, Hikaru made his way to leave, but when he turned around and found Keito staring back at him, he stopped, eyes widening.
“Um,” Hikaru cleared his throat, “What’s up?”
“I was worried about you,” Keito answered. “When Yabu called break, you practically sprinted out of the room. You alright?”
“Yeah, I’m okay,” Hikaru nodded, hoping Keito wouldn’t catch his lie after years of friendship.
Keito raised a brow, and Hikaru could feel a small sweat breaking out on his forehead as his face become hot. Hopefully his cheeks weren’t becoming bright red, that would surely give him away.
Keito sighed, taking a step closer to Hikaru. “I know you want me to not think anything is wrong, but we’ve been friends for far too long for me to just do that.”
“Damn,” Hikaru cursed, not realizing he said it out loud until Keito gave him a weird look. “I mean,” Hikaru stuttered, clearing his throat again. “This is really awkward.” Hikaru chuckled, running a hand through his hair.
“You’re the one making it awkward, you freak,” Keito smiled, and then asked, “Will you tell me what’s wrong?
“I don’t know if I should,” Hikaru said, biting his lip. “It might, change things between us,” he admitted.
“Maybe that wouldn’t be so bad?” Keito asked, “Don’t people say change is good, and stuff.”
“It’s not good when it could hurt a friendship.” Hikaru replied, looking down at the ground.
“Nothing could hurt that, I’ll always be your friend, no matter what,” Keito said, “C’mon, what’s up?”
Hikaru breathed in, swallowing down his nerves. It was now or never, all he had to do was open his mouth and say, “Keito, I like you, as more than a friend.”
Too bad it came out as, “Keitoilikeyouasmorethanafriend!”
Keito blinked, “Could you repeat that?”
“I like you as more than a friend.” Hikaru said, clearly pronouncing his words and speaking much slower.
Keito gasped, eyes widening at Hikaru’s confession. “Re-really?”
Hikaru nodded, trying to prepare himself for what would happen next. Keito would politely decline his feelings, and then reassure him that nothing could hurt their friendship, before dragging Hikaru back to practice and acting as if nothing happened.
Hikaru was ready for this scenario, so when Keito attacked him with a fierce hug, causing the two of them to stumble back and almost fall onto the floor, Hikaru could only stand there, gaping in shock with his arms hanging by his sides.
“I can’t believe you like me back!” Keito exclaimed, “I was so certain you and Inoo were together!”
“Wait,” Hikaru pulled back from the hug, looking at Keito curiously, “You thought that Inoo and I were together? Oh my god!” Hikaru laughed, “That’s hysterical!”
“Is not!” Keito slapped Hikaru’s arm, “You guys are always together and so close, I thought I never stood a chance.”
“Neither did I,” Hikaru grabbed Keito’s hand, “I thought you and Takaki were together, and it kind of broke my heart. I mean, you do clean his room and all.”
“No way,” Keito shook his head, “Yuuyan and I are just friends, and,” he paused, “I can’t help but clean his room, it’s always so disorganized.”
Gradually, their laughter began to subside, and the two stood there in the restroom, quietly holding each other’s hand.
“We should get back to practice,” Keito broke the silence, his smile turning shy when Hikaru laced their fingers together.
“Yeah, we should,” Hikaru responded, but neither made the first move to leave, perfectly content with just standing there, excited for this new change in their relationship.
