Yuto is thirteen when he first meets Keito Okamoto, a shy boy with a British accent and poofy, poofy hair. He takes Keito’s hand and introduces himself, in English, he notes proudly, and Keito replies back in quiet Japanese.
He asks Keito what kind of things he likes; the answers are guitar, school, and friends, and he asks Keito what he likes best about England, about Japan.
He listens to Keito talk, watches his confidence grow as he describes his home in Suffolk, talking excitedly about his classes and his friends. He sees Keito deflate when he begins speaking about Japan, how his mother and father don’t get along anymore and he’s worried they’re going to divorce. Intense sadness settles over Keito, and Yuto doesn’t like that, he thinks the new boy looks much better when he’s grinning charmingly.
So he does the only think that comes to mind, he leans over and pokes the mole under Keito’s eye, and watches in amusement as the British boy blushes and swats his hand away.
Two
On the night of his fifteenth birthday, Keito shows up at his doorstep with a sleeping bag tucked under his arm, and a duffel bag held loosely in his hand. He grabs the bag from the older boy and then invites him into the house, thanking him for coming. Keito nods and tells Yuto happy birthday for the sixth time today, the first four times over the phone and the fifth time at practice, spoken quietly into his ear when they were dancing.
Yuto leads Keito into his room where the other members of seven are, Chinen and Yamada sitting on his bed and cooing over his brother, Raiya, while Ryutaro sits on the floor, his eyes glued to the TV.
Yuto laughs and helps Keito set his stuff on the floor, and begins to make his way back towards the others when Keito stops him, a hand on his wrist. Yuto looks at Keito questioningly, and the boy blushes, reaching down into his duffel bag and pulling out a wrapped present. Wordlessly he hands it to Yuto, and he takes it with a smile, tearing open the wrapping paper enthusiastically.
When he sees the present inside, he beams, the torn paper falling to the floor as he eyes the fuzzy beanie. Slipping it onto his head, he asks Keito how he looks before hugging the older boy, thanking him. Keito shakes his head and wraps his arms around Yuto’s waist, giving it a shy squeeze.
They break apart when Chinen yells at them, and Yamada snickers at the blushes on their faces. Raiya thinks it’s all so cute and asks his nii-chan if he likes Keito-kun, and Ryutaro looks away from his TV show for a moment to give them a glare, a signal he is angry at them for interrupting his daze.
Keito laughs at this, his arms still around Yuto’s waist and the boy smiles, leaning his head against Keito’s for a second, his cheekbone brushing against the mole under Keito’s eye.
Three
Yuto sits down with a plop, his sigh echoing across the room. Yamada looks over at him and pokes his cheek, a silent inquiry as to what’s up.
Yuto doesn’t respond, just looks at the magazine clutched in his hands, his thumb covering Keito’s right eye and the mole that lies under it.
Four
When he’s sixteen, Yuto doesn’t think he can keep it in anymore, and so one day after school he marches up to Keito’s apartment and knocks determinedly on the door, taking deep breaths. He keeps telling himself he can do this, he can confess to Keito, he can tell the older boy that his smile makes his heart speed up and that he may possibly most likely be in love with him.
The door opens and Keito smiles at him, and there goes his heart, and the words he had planned out in the last three seconds die on his lips.
So instead he improvises, moves completely on impulse and presses his lips against Keito’s. He pauses, closing his eyes and then moves, and he sighs in relief when Keito begins moving too, pulling him into his arms and deepening the kiss.
They break away after a few minutes, a little breathless and a little more in love, and Yuto bends down again and kisses the mole under Keito’s eye, his lips curling up into a smile when Keito wrinkles his nose and blushes.
Five
Yuto squeaks in surprise when Keito suddenly tackles him, spinning him around in an enthusiastic hug. He clings to Keito’s shoulders, even after the boy sets him down and takes a deep breath, before inquiring what the hell was that about.
Keito smiles, and pulls a piece of paper out of his pocket. Yuto bends over and squints at the tiny print, a grin spreading across his face as he reads it. When he finishes, he brings Keito into a hug, whispering against his neck how proud he is, how much he loves him. Keito returns the sentiment and pulls back from the embrace, staring up at Yuto with warm eyes.
Laying a hand on Keito’s cheek, Yuto touches the mole under his eye and closes the distance between them.
