Takaki sighed, resting his chin in his palm as he stared at the group across the room. As usual, Yabu was laughing with Hikaru as the other made funny faces at Inoo, who was trying to do his homework, but failing due to the interruption of his two friends. Their close knit friendship always made Takaki a little jealous, but he had grown used to it over the years. Now though, he was jealous for an entirely different reason.
He liked Yabu, a lot, but it was impossible to get the boy’s attention. He was always too preoccupied with Hikaru and Inoo, and unless Takaki magically became them, or something, there was no way Yabu would ever truly notice him.
Takaki paused, sitting up straight as he began to ponder.
A little more like Hikaru and Inoo?
“Hmmm,” Takaki hummed under his breath, a smile forming on his face.
“Hey Kou,” Takaki grinned as he sat down, throwing an arm around the other’s shoulders. “What’s up?” he asked in English, as Hikaru often did.
“Er,” Yabu looked at him strangely, “Not much, you okay Yuuyan?”
“Oh yeah, I’m cool,” Takaki shrugged, “You know, same old same old. Started reading this really epic book, called War and Peace. Heard of it?”
Yabu raised a brow, “Yeaaaah, Inoo read it once. Yuuyan, you sure you’re okay, you’re not acting like yourself?”
“What do you mean?” Takaki asked, laughing nervously as Yabu’s eyes bore into his.
“Well, you’re acting like Hikaru and Kei,” Yabu turned towards him, and Takaki smiled awkwardly; the gig was up, that much was obvious. Yabu continued, “Which makes no sense to me, because I think you’re fine just the way you are.”
Takaki whined, looking away from Yabu, “No you don’t. If you did, then you’d notice me more but you don’t, you only see Hikaru and Inoo. I just want you to notice me,” and like me back Takaki said to himself, frowning.
To his surprise, Yabu began chuckling, and Takaki snapped his eyes back towards the older boy. “Stupid,” Yabu shook his head, scooting closer to him and Takaki’s eyes widened, “I’ve always noticed you, you’re just so aloof at times, it’s hard to approach you,” Yabu’s hand covered Takaki’s, giving it a squeeze, “And you know, one Hikaru and one Kei is more than enough for me, but I’d love to have more Yuuyan in my life.”
Takaki blushed, “Really?”
Yabu nodded, “Yes, now,” Yabu got up, bringing Takaki with him, “How about we go get something to eat, just you and I?”
“That sounds perfect,” Takaki smiled, and together the two left the practice room, walking hand in hand.
