Pity
Closing his eyes, Yamada took a deep breath and held it for a second, in an attempt to gather some courage. Exhaling shakily, he approached his friend and tapped him gently on the shoulder, smiling widely when the other turned around and greeted him warmly, “Ryo-chan, hey there.”
“Keito,” Yamada nodded, looking at Keito and then glancing over at Yuto, who looked confused for a second, til realization dawned over him and with a discreet wink, he left the two.
“Later Yuto,” Keito called out and waved, before turning his attention back towards Yamada, “You okay Ryo-chan, you look kind of sick?” Keito raised his hand to Yamada’s forehead, the back of his hand resting against the warm flesh, “You feel hot.”
“It’s fine,” Yamada stepped back, and Keito withdrew his hand with a frown, “Actually, there’s something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Of course,” Keito reassured him, “I’m always here for you.”
Taking another deep breath, Yamada opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by a loud yell, followed by Hikaru running towards them and tackling Keito with a big hug, throwing his arms around Keito’s shoulders. Keito paused, shocked by the sudden hug, but he returned it, arms wrapping around Hikaru’s small waist.
“Keito!” Hikaru giggled, “Let’s go get something to eat, I’m hungry!”
Keito looked over Hikaru’s shoulder and at Yamada, who avoided Keito’s gaze by keeping his eyes trained on his shoes, and Yamada didn’t look up, not til the door slammed shut behind the pair and he looked at the door, tears falling slowly down his cheeks.
Desperation
“You should’ve punched Hikaru in the face or something,” Chinen replied, after hearing Yamada’s story, “Seriously, every time you try and talk to Keito alone, he shows up. How many times has it happened now?”
“A lot,” Yamada answered, the phone cradled in the crook of his neck as he worked on his math work, “Maybe it would be better to just give up?”
“No way!” Chinen shouted, causing Yamada to wince as his ears ringed for a few seconds, “Okay, next time you try and talk to Keito, let me know and I’ll tie up Hikaru if I have to, seriously.”
Despite his dreary mood, Yamada couldn’t help but laugh, the image of a tied up Hikaru with a triumphant Chinen standing next to him was just too funny.
“Actually,” Yamada blinked, turning his attention back towards Chinen, “Just call him. Hikaru can’t interrupt you there.”
Yamada nodded, mumbling to himself, “Unless he’s with Keito, which is very likely and in which case, I think I’ll probably just,” hearing a faint beep, Yamada grabbed his phone and looked at it, eyes widening when he saw who it was, “Chii, it’s Keito! He’s calling me right now, what do I do?”
“Answer, idiot!” Chinen yelled, so Yamada quickly switched lines and with a nervous laugh, asked, “Hello?”
“Hey,” Keito replied, “Listen, I wanted to apologize about earlier.”
Yamada smiled into the phone, “It’s okay, we all know how Hikaru is,” but Keito didn’t respond how he expected him to, instead he said, “That wasn’t fair to you though, you were clearly upset and I just left you, like it was nothing.”
“Don’t feel like that,” Yamada shook his head, biting his lip, “I like you too much to let you be sad like that.”
Realizing what he just said, Yamada smacked himself in the forehead, mentally cursing his existence til Keito said back, “And I like you too much to let you be sad, so, what’s up?”
“Um,” Yamada paused, looking around his room, “Well, I uh,” sighing heavily, he ran a hand through his hair and said, “Never mind, it’s cool.”
“It’s not though,” Keito quickly answered, his tone impatient, “Ryosuke, please tell me what’s wrong. I care a lot about you, you’re one of my closet friends and -”
“That’s the problem!” Yamada shouted, chuckling sadly, “Right there, in your head we’re just friends but to me, you mean so much more!” as he began to cry, he continued, “But that’s it, we’re just friends and it sucks because I have a ton of feelings for you, and I can’t just make them go away,” wiping away his tears, Yamada stopped himself from saying anything more, silent as he waited for Keito’s response.
Except there was none, and with a hurt heart, Yamada hung up the phone and tossed it aside, letting his head fall onto his desk as he sobbed into his arms.
Melancholy
After his confession, Yamada went out of his way in avoiding Keito, ignoring his texts and calls, telling his mother to say he wasn’t home when Keito stopped by to talk, even going as far as skipping out on practice. Sadly though, he couldn’t avoid him forever, especially when Yabu was threatening to kill him if he missed another practice.
Walking into the JUMP practice room, Yamada quickly ran to Chinen and attached himself to the younger boy, in hopes that he would protect him from facing even more heartbreak.
“Don’t worry Yama-chan,” Chinen patted his head, signaling for Yuto to side on Yamada’s empty side, “I won’t leave unless you want me to.”
“Eh?” Yuto asked, looking at his friend with concern, “Is this because of the whole Keito thing?” Chinen nodded, so Yuto continued, “Wouldn’t it be best to just get it over with, like ripping off a bandaid?”
“It’s not for us to say,” Chinen silently agreed with Yuto, pulling Yamada into his arms and holding the boy close, “When Yamada is ready, he’ll talk to Keito. Until then, we’ll be here for him.”
Yuto sighed, nodding with reluctance and Yamada closed his eyes to prevent the tears from slipping, and to resist the urge to look at Keito.

“I don’t know what to do,” Keito told Inoo, sharing his bento with the older boy, “He won’t speak to me, look at me, anything.”
“He’s scared,” Inoo said, swallowing a bit of rice as he pointed at Keito, “I mean, you guys are close friends but he’s into you, and whatever you say to him, will either ruin your friendship or improve it, depends.”
“On what?” Keito asked, taking a sip from his soda.
“Whether you return his feelings or not.” Inoo shrugged, grabbing the piece of chicken that Keito had dropped.
Regret
Yamada rubbed at his sore eyes, red and puffy from too many nights of crying. Walking into the bathroom, he turned on the faucet and splashed some cold water onto his face, in hopes to look a little less dead, so Takaki wouldn’t fret.
Just as he turned the faucet off, the bathroom door opened and in stepped Keito, a look of shock appearing on his face when he saw Yamada, without either Yuto or Chinen glued to his side.
“Hey,” Keito said, smiling awkwardly, “Feel like I haven’t seen you in ages.”
Yamada snorted, rolling his eyes as he sighed, defeated, “Let’s just get this over with.”
Keito cringed but nodded, leaning against the bathroom wall as he spoke, “You’re one of my closet friends, Ryo-chan.”
“I know,” Yamada responded, “We’re just friends, nothing more.”
“I’m sorry,” Keito stuttered, voice failing as his shoulders began to shake, “I don’t want to hurt you but I don’t want to give you a false hope either,” wiping away a stray tear, Keito turned towards Yamada and looked him in the eye, “If I could, I’d make myself fall in love with you right now, so I wouldn’t have to hurt you,” Keito stopped, unable to control his tears as he slid down the bathroom wall, arms holding his knees to his chest.
“I know you would,” Yamada sniffled, walking over to Keito and sitting besides him, letting his head rest on Keito’s shoulder, “But you can’t, and you’re going to hurt me.”
“Yeah,” Keito mumbled, grabbing Yamada’s hand and giving it squeeze, “I’m sorry Ryo-chan, I really am. You’re one of my closest friends, I just,”
“Yeah,” Yamada sighed, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, “You’re one of my closest friends too.”
