The best way I've found of taking night photos is finding somewhere to rest the camera, then putting it on a long exposure, AND giving it a couple second timer, so it can have a little time to stop moving after you press the button. I have a digital and I've gotten some pretty cool night photos that way.
Good suggestions, except my photos (including this one) tend to be taken during walks home/to work, and the only thing I'd maybe have to rest it on would be a tree, which wouldn't work out too well. And carrying a tripod on the way to work doesn't seem like something I'm about to do.
There're those crazy grippy tripod things that have articulated legs and stuff - I don't think they're super expensive or anything. And they're pretty small, so you could put one in your pocket. They show up on woot occasionally.
