Oh man. That totally blows my mind. Divorce totally scares the hell out of me. When it finally came out into the open, did it freak out as much as finding that paper?
Honestly I don't think it did. Although it did make it real. I was literally shaking when I found that. Since I'd asked my mom before that if they were going to divorce, it'd been something I thought about, but somehow it wasn't reality until I basically forced the words out of my mom. The worst was having to wake my brother up and have him come downstairs so they could tell him. Don't think I'll ever forget the way his face twisted up when he heard. That freaked me out too, more than hearing the words themselves. I don't know. Big family cryfest followed by breakfast and our parents telling us that we still had to go to school like it was a normal day.
You know, the more I think/write about this, the more I just feel like a whiny turn-of-the-century kid who thinks she's gone through something unique because her parents divorced when half of couples do these days. But then, I don't think the fact that it's common now makes it any less relevant to anyone.
You know, when my parents divorced they sat me down and told me flat out. I think it actually made it worse.
My parents divorce was disgusting... in fact, it still is. They honestly have gotten to the point where they cannot e-mail one another and have to send everything through me instead. They act like they are four years old.
You're really lucky that your parents are still on civil terms. And at least you know that your parents wanted 50-50 custody because they cared. Mine was caused because of a personal vendetta against my mother. My dad just wanted to hurt my mom more and make her life miserable. When I chose to live with my mom full time, he just "okay" and wasn't even upset when I left.
Sorry, now I'm all whiny too.
Divorces just suck. I really think the relationship between my mother and my father has really made me analyze my relationships. In fact, its pretty much scared me enough to think that I probably don't ever want to get married.
