My hair is impossible as well. What I do is plaster the front part of my hair down with water, and then wrap a scarf around it movie-star style while I sleep. That way it's nice an flat in the morning.
We have the same sort of hair and I used to live in Florida so I am all about the humidty and how much it sucks.
I can, however, get my hair stick ass straight (you can look in my journal to see curly vs. straight pics...I have both in my most recent post.)
What I do is first do the whole blow dry brush thing. Then using a curling iron or straightening iron (usually a curling iron because it actually works better with a lil' at a time.)
Take a small chunk of hair and hairspray the hell out of it...I mean like aresol can shit. And then run your curling iron on it a few times to get it stick straight. Then use some frizz ease or something similar on it to keep it straight. Hairspray is so key to keeping your volume down.
I also use some essential oil on my hair when I'm done. Rosemary works best on dark hair like ours.
