First off, I didn’t know that John Patrick Shanley told whoever the actor was playing Father Flynn at the time of production whether or not he was actually guilty. I think that’s awesome; it’s extremely clever. Not only does it make the show seem different every time, but it illustrates Shanley’s outside position as artist. If the story was about a priest we know is definitively guilty, that is to say, if Shanley makes him clearly guilty in the end, then it could be argued that Shanley may have some personal bias or negative view toward the Catholic priesthood. The play becomes nothing more than another attack on an existing and on-going concern with Catholic priests. Hell, it’s such a prevalent issue all you needed to do was see a preview of the movie to guess what it was about. Now, if the priest turns out to be innocent, then Shanley comes off as a defender of the traditional, more conservative entrenchment. Possibly, anyway. By making it different every time, he achieves a kind of moral middle-ground with this issue… ( ... )
