I had to do it. He'd trapped me in a hallway before when I was having one of my wheezing and coughing fits. I had to make him fear me.

You didn't have to do a thing. That's the point. You didn't have to, essentially, break my trust, you didn't have to hurt anyone. You chose to.

I generally, would struggle to defend myself against the man who killed me recently. I do not see the need to control him by fear. Do not dress up an action you chose to take as necessity.
