of reasons why i enjoy working with children

Feb 07, 2009 01:19

I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about work/volunteer related stuff but oh gosh, I just met the most adorable creepy boy at my shift. We were talking about dinosaurs (as usual - I know so much now thanks to all the kids who've dropped by!) and it somehow meandered into horror movies and he asked me whether I've seen Scary Movie 4/5 and proceeded ( Read more... )

dang... o___o;;
that kid DOES sound creepy. but you're right, almost amazing how much he knew for a little kid?
did you know children's brains grow at a faster rate than when they hit puberty?
and then again, we learn at an accelerated rate once we hit 18-20 (when we enter college).

That's why we pick up languages so fast when we're young. :) Maybe the little boy also picked up everything you need to know about scary movies in that time. -0-;;

Haha. I have tons of more interesting stories like that. Actually, what was going through my mind was "what IS this kid watching?" I've been learning about violence in the media and all in my classes at Anthropology but this experience pretty much sealed the thought that seriously, these things could be really dangerously pervasive. Especially towards little kids who absorb everything and have not quite formed conceptions of what's good or bad.

I wish I took on another language when I was younger o_o Now language acquisition for me takes so much effort, and being billingual doesn't seem to be enough in our current world anymore. :(

being bilingual is enough! don't worry! you're still ahead of like, 60% of Americans who can only speak English. -0-;;;;

And don't I see some Japanese up there?! what's this about being bilingual? Haha! Do you know Chinese?

Thanks Steph, lol! It's just that at university I'm constantly seeing people fluent in so many languages, it's intimidating. I think it helps that Canadians learn French and English and whatever else they learn as they grow up (seeing how many multiracial families there are here)

Yep, I know Chinese. I've learnt it formally together with English from 7 to about 16 :) Haha, I'm in the process of learning Japanese but it's going very slowly because I'm lazy and not studying it formally at school :(

I'm super curious, did you tell the mom? I would have been like "It depends on what you think is scary..." By the way, COMPLETELY agree on the Chucky thing. My sister knows that even seeing the cases in the video store freak me out, and she likes to torment me with them. So scary. So scarring. Shudder.

There are no words for how much that sucks that you are missing FoTC. I feel for you.

Haha, I didn't! I'm not sure what I would have said really. I mean, I don't want his mum to think he's creeping strangers out - I really felt terrible because she seemed so sorry that her son would talk about something like that, even. I hateee Chucky. With a passion. That show made me stop watching horror since I was 7.

): I KNOW. OH GOD.
The funny thing was, I went to a shop today and they were playing FoTC and I was like ... damn, another reminder of me-not-seeing-them.

Where are you now, you amazing globe traveler? :D Back in Germany?
