Academic Crisis 101: what do you do when you decide to write a paper about the origins of your discipline and you end up arguing that there is no point to your discipline
( Read more... )
Okay I find it vaguely creepy that you responded almost immediately after I posted. Do you check your Flist like every 2 seconds or something!?
BUT YES JOHN/CAMERON (I AM ON SEASON 2 EPISODE 1 AREN'T YOU PROUD OF MY PROCRASTINATING SKILLS) I cried like a baby when Cameron was like "I love you John" and then again when John refused to kill her and handed her the gun. TERMINATION OVERRIDE, YEEESSS John/Cameron! Though that plot point was so going to come up. I'm actually surprised it happened so early.
And also: I AM CONFUSED ABOUT THE TIMELINE. The whole point about John seeing his Dad play baseball with Derek? Huh? So Kyle comes back from the future (20-something) into the past (80s?) and meets Sarah Connor and they have John together? Whaaat.
We've talked about Orientalism in my class on Islam, too! Actually we've been discussing that a lot, recently, as we explore "Islam and the West" and the whole - "who says there's that division in the first place anyway?" thing. Thankfully the course isn't taught from an East-West perspective but from within the perspective of the Islamic tradition itself, and my Prof is super hyper aware of all the problems with Orientalism. It's ridiculous how infiltrated with "western" thought our studies are - geez, even using the term "western" and classifying something as such reflects how strong their influence is
( ... )
I think I need to take a class on Islam. It'll be good to see things from the non Western perspective, really. The whole discussion on Orientalism has been stretched so much that I'm not even sure we're even studying anything productive anymore - especially since we can't pinpoint what the Orient even is!
Ack.
): Haha, I was just about to say that I think I might take tomorrow night off to work on essays in Robarts! My life really revolves around Robarts. Weeeep.
P.S Thanks! :D Yes, I'll let you know as soon as I have news!! *excited too*
yish!! haha i had a meeting with my prof today and he went on about how homi bhabha is near impossible to read haha. i love durlik thanks for introducing him to me haha I like studying about Orientalism; which is pretty much EVERYTHING because we've already admitted that our views have been tainted long agooooooooo anw rite.
haha wait till you see Harootunian - he tops my list of unreadable intellectuals! I've only read a few articles by Homi Bhabha, but the horrors. Yes Arif Dirlik A+++ (haha I love how geeky it is that we're having favourite INTELLECTUALS omg). I enjoy studying it too, but it frustrates me to no end that at the end of studying there's no resolution?! Sometimes social sciences frustrate me.
miss you lala! hope your day was more happening than mine!
Why are you so insanely productive? :( Why do you make me feel like such a useless student!?!?!?
No I'm kidding XD I admire your work ethic, you crazy girl you. I hope you get the Disney thing and aaaaah Japan! You're gunna visit a host club when you get there right?!
I agree about EAS here at UT. Gluck w/ the essay XDD
Lol. I am not :( I've sold my life/soul to Robarts, pretty much ;A; so any other free time I have left (read: NONE) is spent being frustrated and slaving over my essays!
Anyway XD I've always sort of popped by the T-card place but I've not seen you there?? Haha!
YES HOST CLUB I AM DEFINITELY GOING. I hope I meet people on the exchange program as adventurous! Why are you not going to Korea! :3 You should! :3
Haha. Why are we even taking EAS ... oh, pain. Thanks XD Good luck with your essays (Queer Lit & American History! Wait - aren't you in English & EAS? Lol.)
I have very odd hours right now~ XD; Like random 2 hrs a day~
I really want to! But it's not realistic when I have courses other than EAS to finish in order to complete my degree :( Oh well~ I'd rather go to vacation anyway haha
It's an easy minor xD;; I'm doing a History major + Eng/Eas minors~ =)
I totally empathize with you because i face that same disciplinary existential crisis just about everytime i write an essay! It's been bugging me for the longest time ever and sometimes i just feel so hypocritical. I have this awful habit (recently) of writing papers with no fixed argument in my head and discovering as i go along - a process which involves a lot of heart attacks and self-depracating moments i assure you. Other times, i end up proving myself completely wrong when i set out to prove something else. Essay writing is so emotionally draining!
That aside - DISNEY!!!!
p.s homi bhabha IS impossible to read! Said may be binaristic but don't you agree he makes so much more sense!
Are you back from UBC yet?? Haha I was talking to this guy from Vancouver today and he made UBC sound so amazing, I'm kind of sad I went for the city life over nature ):
I know. I started having these existential problems last year in Anthropology, only this year it's sort of extended to pretty much everything else I'm studying. While I LIKE thinking through these stuff, I kind of miss the certainty in JC life ... haha, or maybe, the Singaporean education system? I totally know what you mean! I always write without a fixed thesis and go back to write my thesis (cough). And yes, I would take studying for a mid-term anyday over writing essays - it takes me weeks to write an essay. ):
YES DISNEY!! Walt Disney World 2009 hopefully here I come!!
P.S Haha that comment was made by Nicola! I haven't read Bhabha much, but yes I agree with his general un-readability. I definitely agree that what Said says makes sense AND is easy to digest though. :D
