I think I first read Foundation when I was 13 (which is, of course, the best age to read any SF) and it's been years since I reread it. I can't say whether I'd agree now with you or not if I reread it. However, was it clear from the edition you read that these books were originally published as a series of independent stories starting in 1942? Compared to most of the SF being written in that period this is gold.
oh, yeah, i knew going in when it had been written, and how bad the sci-fi around then had been.
unfortuntely, it's not 1942, so while i can respect it's impact on sci-fi, i still don't like it. the same way i respect Gregorian chant for a lot of reasons; namely it's influence on music that came afterward, but i don't like it. at all.
~shrug~
and good on you for being able to make it through that book at the age of 13,too. i'd have put a bullet in my foot just to keep my eyes open. ;-)
the thing that interested me most was when i started playing the "which part(parts) is(are) a take on the Roman Empire". So I do enjoy it for turning to history to make sci-fi.
