Mother and Son - Chapter 3
It is two days later.
Cameron is walking through the pediatrics floor to see David for the last time. This afternoon he will be discharged and his father will take him home. In her hand, she carries a small Beanie Baby; a parting gift for the brave little boy. As usual the television is on in the patient room and David is seated on his bed, intently watching the screen. Cameron knocks on the glass door before sliding it open and walking inside.
“Hi David.” She offers him a smile.
He hasn’t spoken to her then entire time he’s been in the hospital. David turns his head to see who it is and a quick grin crosses his face. He’s wearing a pair of sweatpants, a Spiderman t-shirt, and matching sneakers.
“I brought you something, since you’re going home today.” Cameron holds out the Beanie Baby toward him.
David looks at her and then looks at the new toy. The grin returns to his face, small hands eagerly take the present from her hands. He concentrates on the Beanie Baby bear for several moments before finally seating it on the bed with him and going back to the cartoon on the screen.
Cameron smiles, pulling up a chair, “Do you mind if I watch TV with you?”
He shakes his head.
“Okay. Thanks.” She laughs softly.
Moments later the sliding glass door opens and a man enters the room. “Hello.” He speaks in a polite tone.
“Hi. I’m Dr. Allison Cameron.” She replies, standing up from the chair and offering her hand.
“Sean Kaplan.” He shakes her hand, “My wife tells me you were there? When it happened?”
She nods, “I was. And your son was extremely brave.”
David turns his head to watch the conversation, his hands clutching the Beanie Baby.
“Thank you. Mandi and I are extremely grateful for everything you have done.” Sean perches on his son’s hospital bed.
“It was no problem.” Cameron smiles.
“I just finished signing David’s discharge forms and reviewing the aftercare procedures with the nurse.” Sean gestures with a folded piece of paper in his hand.
She nods again, “There were no complications or infection, so he should heal pretty quickly.”
He smiles and then turns to David, “Are you ready to go home, D?”
The youngster nods and offers his dad a huge smile as he carefully climbs off the bed.
Cameron kneels down in front of him and gives him a hug. “Bye angel, feel better soon, okay?”
He smiles at her. “Bye.” It is the first word he has spoken in Cameron’s presence.
She suddenly feels overwhelmed with sadness and her eyes prickle with tears. It’s only been two days, but she feels a bond with David after seeing him through the trauma of the accident. She realizes she is becoming overly-emotional, so she hugs him once more and then stands up.
Sean takes David’s hand, he smiles warmly at Cameron before they head out of the room.
-------------------
A few days in the hospital has done Mandi Kaplan a world of good. She is in good spirits when Cameron stops by her room for a visit.
“Dr. Cameron. Hi.” The woman smiles as Cameron walks into the room.
“Hello. You look happy.” She replies, pulling the sliding door closed behind her.
“I just ate the best tasting sandwich ever probably because it wasn’t from the hospital cafeteria. And I am so ready to go home.” Mandi is sitting in her bed; her arm cast is propped up with pillows. There are a myriad of colors on her cast where her son has been ‘decorating’ it during his visits.
“Yeah, the food here is often very bland.” A slight smirk. “Tomorrow, right?”
Mandi nods, “I believe so. I’d better be.” She laughs.
Cameron smiles. “Unless something weird happens overnight, I am almost certain you will be discharged.”
“David is really happy with that bear you gave him. He’s been carrying it around with him everywhere apparently.”
“Really?” Cameron laughs, “I am so glad he likes it.” She pours Mandi a cup of ice water and hands it too her.
“Thanks.” She takes a few big gulps from the cup before placing it down on the nearby table. “It was nice of you to do that for him.”
“Oh it was my pleasure. I just didn’t want him associating me with a car accident, so I figured a toy was the next best thing.” Cameron smiles.
“I really appreciate you coming to visit me. Most people probably wouldn’t do that.”
Cameron reaches out and lightly squeezes Mandi’s hand. “I like helping people and making sure they are okay.” She replies softly.
“It probably makes you a good doctor.”
“Thanks. My boss would probably disagree with you, but I don’t share his opinion.” Cameron chuckles.
A smile crosses Mandi’s face. “Bosses are meant to be challenging.”
“They are.” Cameron agrees. Her pager begins chiming and she pulls it off the waistband of her pants to look at the display. “Speaking of bosses, I need to go. We have a patient.”
“Okay. Maybe I will see you tomorrow before I go home.” Mandi looks hopeful.
“Maybe.” Cameron walks to the sliding glass door, she smiles. “Bye.”
“Bye.”
Cameron walks out of the room and toward the elevators. House is beckoning, and she goes because their patient needs them. She doesn’t dwell on the fact that she probably won’t see Mandi tomorrow when she is discharged. Cameron, Foreman, and Chase will be working through the night, trying to diagnose their patient. She walks inside the elevator, her mind beginning to focus on the tasks ahead.
It’s hard, developing a bond with a patient. They usually go back home once cured, and back to their lives. Cameron keeps a small piece of each one of them in her mind. It’s a constant reminder of why she does what she does.
