A Distraction from the Unattainable

She sits up in bed, naked and folded into elegant anatomic origami, her chin resting on her bent knee. He tries to decide what it is about her pose that makes it appear she’s about to spring out of bed and make for the door. It’s probably the fact that she always does. Cameron is quiet after sex, and Chase racks his brain as usual, trying to think of something conversational to say-something to make her stay.

"You're thinking about him, aren't you."

She looks sideways moving only her eyes; stares into his. When she sees that lying will get her nowhere, she gives a half smile and shrugs. "Can't put anything past you."

“That’s why you want no strings, isn’t it. You’re…hung up on him.”

She notes the accusation he’s stepped around. You’re in love with him. Chase is simply a distraction from the unattainable, and he knows it. “Doesn’t matter if I am-I can’t have him. Besides you don’t get to ask me why there are no strings because there are no strings. Or something.”

“Well I think you should make a serious go for it. Jump him.”

Cameron raises her eyebrows, then gracefully rises from the bed. “Odd advice, since you’d be missing all this,” she says, vaguely gesturing at her nude form. She stoops to collect her discarded clothes.

“And I would miss it-hey-where are you going?”

“Home. No strings; I sleep at home.”

“Aw, sleep here. Aren’t you tired? You’ll get more sleep this way.”

She looks at him skeptically, but can’t help but take in the warm inviting bed and contrast it with the drizzling weather outside. “Can’t hurt I suppose,” she agrees.

However, Cameron loses far more sleep dwelling on Chase’s suggestion than she gained by not driving home.

You should make a serious go for it. Jump him.

Cameron lies in the wrong bed, listening to the steady breath of the wrong man sleeping. In the dark her hand slides down her abdomen and between her thighs. Sex with Chase has left her wet but unsatisfied. Her fingertips slide over her clit and then she forces them into herself hard while she thinks jump him over and over. She pictures herself in his office, one hand on his shoulder pushing a surprised House down into his chair. She pictures stripping for him, and the moment his lips part in shock she will kiss him; suck his lip between hers and show him what he’s missing. Now in her mind House’s large hand slips up her inner thigh. It’s him finger-fucking her in Chase’s bed.

When she comes she bites her fist to keep from screaming his name.

oOoOoOo

Cameron only becomes nervous about her plan in the intervening moments between when she rings House’s doorbell and when she hears the knob turn. All she has to do is figure out if she has a chance with him…

“Yes?”

He doesn’t look surprised enough to see her, and it puts her off her balance. She stutters as she recovers. “I, uh,” she raises the folder she carries. “I need you to sign off on this paper before it can be published.”

“You didn’t mention it at work.”

“You wouldn’t have signed it at work.”

He shrugs and takes the manuscript. “What makes you think I’ll sign it now?”

“I’m not leaving until you do,” she says steadily.

He turns and walks into the apartment, throwing “suit yourself” over his shoulder.

She follows him in.

House seats himself on the sofa in front of the television, which is on but muted. To her surprise he grabs a pencil from the coffee table and begins making marks on the pages of her paper. She’s almost disappointed; if he just reads and signs it she’ll be gone in minutes without accomplishing her objective.

She sits beside him on the couch and attempts to distract him. Her slim calf is pressed against his warm one. He doesn’t look up. She takes in the scene on the large television screen before her; bad soft-core pornography. “Skin-a-max?”

His eyes don’t lift from the pages. “I can’t afford a professional every day of the week, Cameron.”

“You don’t need to pay for sex,” she says.

“No, you don’t need to pay for sex. You’re so inherently desirable you can’t imagine what it would be like to not have it anytime you want.”

She forces herself to brush over the fact he’s called her desirable because it doesn’t necessarily mean desirable to him. “I can’t get it anytime I want,” she says.

He rolls his eyes without looking away from the paper. “You could from me.”

“Yeah right,” she says sarcastically.

“Cameron you can’t leave it like this.” He moves closer to her so she can look on, causing the full length of his thigh to come into contact with hers. “You need to discuss the fact that this is arrived at by process of elimination. Not everyone is as clever as you.”

She nods and says ok, but all she can think about is the fact he’s just complimented her, the feeling of his leg pressed to hers. She squirms a little closer, leaning near ostensibly to see what he’s reading. She delights in the fact he seems to notice but doesn’t move away. It’s all a bit sixth grade, but she’s thrilled at the contact. She basks in his presence as he reads; she never wants to leave. Eventually though he comes to the last page.

“It’s not bad.” He closes the file folder with the corrected manuscript inside. “There are a few sections that still need work. You can bring it back in a couple days with changes.”

“Thank you,” she says and reaches for the folder. Her fingers brush against his and she senses she is not the only one letting the touch linger a moment.

House looks her in the eyes a long moment, then his glance slips down her body and back up. “You can see yourself out,” he says, and it sounds almost reluctant.

“Yeah, thanks again.”

Tonight Cameron will lose sleep again.

I can’t get it anytime I want.

You could from me.

He just might have meant it.
