Tonight I went lindy hopping at The Jam Cellar, which, despite its name, is neither underground nor a vendor of delicious jams and jellies. Actually the dancing occurs on the second floor of an 18th century mansion in the Columbia Heights district of Washington, D.C. One could not have asked for better ambience ( Read more... )

Maybe he had already promised somebody else a dance right away and it would have been rude to that person to dance with you first?

but.

this is a rampant problem in the dc swing scene - swing snobbery. you are correct; some people go and only want the best. hard to tell if you experienced it or not.

Oh Trey. He never remmebers who I am either, even I was there at the beginning too. Maybe he had promised someone the next song, but he could at leat have the decency to ask you later for one measly five minute tune. Much as I love to swing, it does have its cultish qualities, and the top dancers can certainly be rude, on or off the dance floor. (I encountered this at the Leafe just the other day, with ppl who shall remain nameless.)
You should be glad you got to dance in such a cool location, tho. I went to the Jam Cellar a few times when it was actually in the basement of a business suite in downtown Vienna. (VA, not Austria.)A mansion sounds pretty sweet!
