Actually that is really good reasoning. Perhaps they thought the doctor deserved break this time around. But yeah he has always had to pay the cost of saving the world hasn't he.
I enjoyed series five but it really couldn't compare to the four seasons prior.
You nailed - exactly - why "The Big Bang" came up short. Oh, it was a rollicking good story, with lots of drama and twists and the like. But it was too neat, too complete. Steven Moffat tied it up with a pretty bow, and I much prefer a little less pretty and a lot more gritty.
I don't know... maybe River is supposed to be the loose end, the question mark, the potential götterdämmerung lurking out there somewhere. Gonna take a lot of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff if that's the case, because we know where she ends up eventually... *shrugs* If River is supposed to be all that, well, she isn't. (And don't get me wrong - I like River. Liked her more with Ten, granted... But she's an interesting character, and the idea of someone weaving herself through the Doctor's complicated timeline is really pretty irresistible
