we keep our house at 65 in the winter. 72 is swelteringly hot to me...and if i get cold, i own layerable clothing and blankets. it's also very expensive to heat my house (last month's bill was $450) in the winter so we tend to keep things chilly to save money.

Too hot really depends on a lot of factors. Personal and environmental ( ... )

We actually bought a thermometer to prove that it was as cold as we said it was

A bit OT. I had a roommate who would crank the heat to 90+ degrees. When confronted he claimed that the thermostat only turned the heat on and off and the temp you set it for didn't mean anything (go figure, he was kind of stupid).

My GF's roommate gave me a wall thermometer, just fit into my coat pocket, to take home to prove the thermostat actually effected the temperature.

On my way home I visited my cousin. She was going through a really rough time and had voluntarily checked herself into a psychiatric hospital. While in her room I commented about the noise from the HVAC ducts...

Her: I know! They say the thermostat is set to 67 but I swear it's too hot in here.
Me: (pulls big ass thermometer out of coat pocket) You're right, it's 73 in here!
Her: Uhmm...why do you have a thermometer in your pocket?
Me: What? How do YOU tell what the temperature is?
Her: OK. Why am I in here and you are walking around free?

Perhaps you guys need a thermometer to measure what the temperature is in everyone's room. The problem may be that when the thermostat is at 72, your room is 72 or even higher while your roommate's room is much lower.

I am going to buck the trend and suggest that you buy a fan or crack your window at night.

I am always cold and my roommates are always hot. We keep the thermo around 70 but I have a space heater in my room and they have fans in their room including one that slots into their window. They closed off their vents as well. Everyone is happy.

I live on the ground floor and my housemates live upstairs, I know it's about 2degrees C higher upstairs than down which is fine for me, because I hate it hot but we still had to turn up the thermostat because they are such cold bodies. They also both have heaters that run all the time, it seems, so much so that, when I go upstairs to the bathroom, I can feel the heat radiating from their rooms. And I know their rooms are warm, I've been in them.

I don't know how they survive it, but I have a back door, it saves my life sometimes.

You have to talk to them about it. I think it's ridiculous to have it higher but I can make my room colder. On top of all the other things, you might be paying for their heating. That wouldn't be fair.
