Day 1 - Friday - 15/08/08
Finished work at 9:30 and said final farewells to the cat. Met at Matt's house and packed the last bags of gear. Had some trouble fitting everything into the roof rack with the spare tyre having to be strapped to the top of the roof bag. Left Brisbane at 10:15 with the GPS tracking our moves. Hopefully I will have a record of everywhere we have driven.
The traffic has been pretty good with only a few morons in excels acting as road blocks. The truck drivers are great though and let us pass if you give them a call via CB. Very good when you are trying to overtake a three bogey road train. Roads are a little rough and in need of some repair.
First stop is Blacksoil BP for fuel and a bite to eat. Lunch in Warra was out the back of an old rail station. The wind was enough to need the Drizabone here and I'm glad I bought it. Stopped at Roma for fuel but pushed on to Mitchell, 90km furthur west.
On the way to Mitchell, we spotted a weird shape on the horizon lit up by the sunset. Seemed to just hang there and not move. At first we thought it was a weather balloon but turned out to be a high flying jet. Maybe a Perth to Brisbane flight.
It was night by the time we reached Mitchell so we decided to stay in a motel. With the temperature expected to reach -3 degrees, it was an easy choice to make. It would mean less time and effort to pack in the morning as well.
Had a barbeque dinner and chatted about the trip so far as well as the trip tomorrow. The motel had a 2 person room and a 4 person self contained cabin available. Cheryl, Greg, Denise and I stayed in the cabin while Matt and Mel took the room.
I had my first bore water shower since... I don't remember how long. Smells like sulphur and feels kinda greasy but a nice hot shower is always welcome.
Oh yeah, we passed Shultz's Meat Tavern after Blacksoil so I picked up a kilo of their beef jerky for the trip. It may last for the entire trip but not likely. A bit too salty compared to the last batch but still good.
