Grateful vs. greatful is a matter of etymology. Though we think they may be the same, because they sound alike, their bases are different. if you ever find some free time (yeah right), you might want to try to find a couple of books on etymology. It sounds really dry, but it's really fascinating to figure out where we're really getting these words which seem so common. It also helps bunches in figuring out or creating new words, and for a writer, that's invaluable.
