Great news on the Tesco AGM fundraising issue :)

Jun 10, 2008 17:33

In just a little over 24 hours, members of the public stepped up to pay and/or pledge the money necessary to foot the £56,888 balance of the £86,888 demanded by Tesco plc to allow the resolution I mentioned in my posting yesterday to be put to a democratic shareholder vote at the upcoming Tesco AGM.

As is explained on the River Cottage website: ( Read more... )

*nods* I am vegetarian on the way to veganism b/c I simply cannot stand the way the industry treats animals.

However, I have also "farm-sat" the hobby farms of a couple of my professors, so I know that animals raised for food don't have to live in terrible conditions. The farms I looked after were lovely, peaceful places for the animals. Farming doesn't have to be cruel -- and the soulless corporations have to be forced to change.

*feels very strongly about this!*

So true! I think we're on the way to making significant changes. The sooner, the better :)

Good! I know you know I'm not that motivated by the issue, but Tesco wind me up a treat anyway, so it's good to see them getting nose-thumbed by some good old-fashioned British amateur obtructors :D

Tee hee! I couldn't agree more! Taking pleasure in this is part of what makes us Brits :)

Hey, that's great news indeed! The thing is, in my opinion, most people don't mind at all to pay a few extra cents for meat from animals that were NOT treated cruelly, it's often much more a question of awareness & convenience.

I'm sure that's right. We've had a couple of TV series drawing attention to this stuff over the last year or so, and lots of people had no idea, and were horrified, when they learned how most farm animals exist. Since Hugh started his campaign last New Year, sales of free-range chickens have gone through the roof in our supermarkets, and sales of 'standard' (as they're euphemistically described) chickens have dropped.

Hee... no need to get carried away! *g*

The dream-sty weekend was lovely, thanks :) The sty itself is beautiful--lots of room for visiting piglets--but probably too expensive. Still, it confirmed for me that that's the area I'd like to live in, and I'm sure I can eventually find something :)
