Sacking of LJ staff with immediate effect & without severance pay -- legal in USA?

I've read a couple of links on my f-list to the news that LJ sacked 12 of its 28 US employees without warning this week.

What LJ did was morally wrong, without question. I would not be averse to some law requiring more notice and/or severance pay in these situations ( ... )

Hi there! Dissenting views are entirely welcome here :)

I think the fact that Americans tend to define the sort of social provision discussed in the comments on here as 'socialism' is interesting in itself, and a reflection of the difference in national attitude that we've been discussing.

In fact, I'm emphatically not a socialist. I believe strongly in the need to take personal responsibility, and I've always voted Conservative rather than Labour or Liberal Democrat (or whatever they're currently called :) But even amongst those who consider themselves to be towards the right of the political spectrum over here (i.e. the Conservatives) there's been a gradual acceptance over time, and with the introduction of what seems to me to be socially responsible legislation, that in a developed and responsible community a balance needs to be struck between defending the rights and needs of the employers, and those of the people they employ. (FWIW, I'm 47 now and I've been self-employed for all but the last 6 years of my working life ( ... )
