Due South: Artwork

Jan 04, 2012 12:30

I recently did a charcoal drawing for the dS story Finishing Touches by demon_bride_/Tatau. The story can be found here on Wordpress, here on AO3, or here at ff.net. Go check it out! Now that the story has been unveiled by the writer, I'm sharing my artwork here.

Character: Benton Fraser
Rating: G

I think you've got a great start. For some reason, 3/4 is actually one of the easiest angles for me. You might try some quick sketches with stylization (Disney or cartooning), as those really helped me develop. Admittedly, you can still see them in my style. XD

But you're doing great, keep it up!

I think I heard one time that 3/4 view is supposed to be one of the easiest. I have no idea why I find it so frakking difficult. Thanks for the suggestion. I might give it a try, although cartooning has never been my thing.

I really like this... you say it doesn't look exactly like him, well, let's just imagine this is one of Ray's earlier attempts. You may not have it up to your satisfaction, but I really like the quirky mouth, and there's a genuinely kind expression to the face.

Now I wish I could borrow you to do some artwork for me! I love charcoal, it's a wonderfully subtle and moody medium.

Ack! I just realized I never replied to your comment! Sorry!

Thank you so much for your kind words. Charcoal isn't my usual medium so it's nice to hear that people still appreciate the work. :)

Bad, bad ride_4ever! How is it I didn't comment on this as soon as it was linked to the fic (on which I was the beta).

(And I still have a file with your WIP dS fanmix, to which, with your encouragement, I've added some bits.)

Ooh, you've added to the fanmix? I'm quite curious about it now.

Also, Fraser in your icon is making me feel guilty. Heh. I'm almost exclusively in the Sherlock fandom now, although I still love due South. I sometimes toy with finishing some WIPs that I have, but I never installed Office on my new(ish) laptop, and I can't open half of the files!

There doesn't seem to be much dS action these days. Is it because people are working on their BB works, or authors moved to a different site?

I don't dare open the fanmix file, BSO that it is, while I'm working on the BB. A number of fen who used to be very active in dSC6D are currently doing more in either Sherlock (such as you are) or in bandom. dSC6D has a smaller creator-base at the moment, but still very active...particularly in the BB, in the recent C6D Midsummer Snippet-Fest that I co-modded, and in fanworks appearing in various multifandom comms. Preps for the RCW 139 20th Anniversary Convention (which I'm attending) have also taken their toll on the time and energy for creating fanworks -- for a while there I was totes consumed by working on vid clips for the 20th Anniversary documentary.
