Character Notes:
History: Once, long ago, the Birds of Passage had a large flock that spread from one edge of Europe to the other. Each member mastered the Dance of Death, wielding a fearsome circular blade. The Dance was beautiful to behold, the person who it was performed for was ultimately mesmerized, but eventually the blade would slay them. The Birds of Passing were infamous, never taking a side. They could do what they like, for their skill was not matched by any other group of assassins.

One member of the flock was named Tira. Tira was trained in the Dance; she was quite good at it. She was trained to become used to the art of murder. The sight of death no longer would faze her-yet her training gave her an odd addiction: murder. To see someone die by her own hands… that gave her such a thrill. This fact would lead her on her path later in life.

During a mission, the fall of the Birds of Passage came to be. The Evil Seed flashed in the sky, turning the leader of the flock insane. The whole organization was dissolved in one day, the chain of command being destroyed. The end of the Birds of Passage came and went; Tira was lost in the storm that came with the Evil Seed.

Eventually the girl found a family, in a quiet town, that took a liking to her. Tira soon found herself having a family when they decided to adopt her. She tried to integrate herself with normal people, being shut off from the murderous underground she had belonged to. She found it hard, but decided that a normal life wouldn’t be too bad; just different. Different wasn’t always a bad thing and so, Tira set aside her addiction to murder. Yet this wasn’t to last.

The youngest child of Tira’s adoptive family had a pet bird. This aggravated Tira for some reason, or perhaps she felt the bird shouldn’t have been a pet in the first place, or perhaps it was simply a childish prank; no matter her reasoning, Tira released the pet bird and set it free into the wild. It was no surprise she gained a scolding for her action. This made Tira angry-no, not just angry-she was furious. She went into a blind rage.

When Tira came out of the rage, all of her adoptive family was dead: she was in a house of corpses. This was the moment when she decided that she just couldn’t make in ‘normal’ society. Taking her ring blade Tira fled her once home to wander aimlessly.

She eventually heard about a man known as the Azure Knight, Nightmare. He was said to be able to kill armies of men, turning the fields into a bloody mess. This warrior, this Azure Knight, sounded like a man who had an addiction for killing like Tira had. A powerful man…a murderous man…Perfect for someone who had an aimless life and a willingness-no, an eagerness--to kill. Tira swore to track Nightmare down and work under him.

On her travels she met a mysterious man wielding a scythe. He told her that Nightmare was no more than a puppet; that the real power was the sword Soul Edge. He warned Tira that it was an evil blade, to turn back. Tira was disappointed, to say the least. It troubled her. Then she thought that she could serve Soul Edge instead. Yes, yes, that would be a perfect substitute. After following a trail of bloody massacres, she found Nightmare at last. He allowed her to serve him.

And so Tira became the servant of Soul Edge, the evil sword. Using Nightmare’s raven servants, she worked towards two goals: one, to destroy the spirit sword, Soul Calibur, and two, find a permanent host for Soul Edge.

Then the wielder of Soul Calibur, Siegfried, fought Nightmare, wielder of Soul Edge. Tira was outside the castle the two fought in. The energies of the clashing swords tore Tira’s mind to pieces. Her consciousness managed to drag itself back together, however, but she was no longer the same. Tira had always been one to have extreme highs and extreme lows; when her mind had clawed itself back together, it formed two different personalities: one from her high energy child-like highs and the other from her angry, depressed lows.

Tira now plans to help Soul Edge and, one day, to become one with him.

Personality: Tira’s main motivation is her addiction. Some people are addicted to alcohol or drugs or even sex, not Tira. She’s addicted to murder due to her exposure of it when she was in the Birds of Passage. This is one of her driving forces; when she tries to subdue her urge to kill, it comes back up with a vengeance. She doesn’t even try to suppress it anymore.

Another consequence of her time in the Birds of Passage is that she simply doesn’t know how to cope with being “free”. When she has freedom all she does is wander, looking for direction. So, she’s dependent (her “Jolly” side feels free to say that she doesn’t want to be left all alone) on Soul Edge for her purpose in life.

Even before the clash of Soul Calibur and Soul Edge, Tira’s personality was one of emotional extremes. To such an extreme, in fact, that some people in the fandom claim that she’s bi-polar. Whether it’s true or not, it seems like it was. She would have extremely childish moments, mocking and surprisingly cheery then she would suddenly have a mood swing and be extremely angry and cynical.

Then she had her mind broken and now has two separate personalities: “Jolly” and “Gloomy”. (For sake of reference, the two separate personalities will be called the two different stances that Tira has in Soul Calibur IV.)

Jolly: Created from her “highs”, Tira’s Jolly side is surprisingly childish for such a crazed murderer. When this personality is in control Tira holds herself a little taller, her voice takes on the tone of a mocking child, and she acts far more immature than her Gloomy side. She mocks people easily; using childish words such as “goody-goody” and refers to killing people as “breaking toys”. This side, however, clearly depends on Soul Edge and Nightmare. She has a fear of being left alone.

Gloomy: Created from her violent lows, Tira’s Gloomy side is the more adult side. She slumps when this personality is control; her voice is deeper and free of the childish remarks. She growls at almost everything, often saying that she’s “not expecting much” from her opponents. She’s also a bit more overtly violent when this personality is dominant. Sometimes Gloomy Tira will even yell “Genocide!” during a battle, for example. When Tira’s Jolly side expresses concern about Nightmare dying, Tira’s Gloomy side on the other hand, doesn’t. Her Gloomy side yells that everything that they worked for is falling apart, that they’re just expected to stand by and do nothing; that nothing, nothing should stop them from achieving happiness.

It doesn’t matter which personality is in control, however, when it comes to Tira’s violence. Both sides are both very violent (even though her Gloomy side is slightly more obvious about it). Tira’s very controlling and manipulative, trying to make everything to go in favor of Soul Edge.

In Soul Calibur IV, Tira switches between her personalities often and almost for no reason. For this reason, her first person entry will have both in the same entry.

What’s this-a toy! A brand new toy! Goody, this is just going to be so much fun, I just know it! ... I don’t see what the use of it would be, though; could be used as a decent paperweight, maybe.

Oh, I know! I could show it to Soul Edge! I’m sure he’d be so proud that I found it. We could use it to find souls…yummy, yummy souls! And toys just think of it. So many people writing in this thing, so many beautiful toys just ready to be broken!

…What’s the use, though? It doesn’t make any sense. Damn it. I can’t seem to work it…if I can’t get it working, then it doesn’t matter if we show it to Soul Edge or not. Damn it! Damn it-oh! Look, its working! I told you, it was going to; you didn’t believe me but I was right! Oh, this will be so much fun!

Third Person:
Prompt: Family

Eiserne Drossel, the Iron Thrush. Her weapon and her soul, it was all Tira had to call her own. That’s the way she liked it. No family, no friends, just her weapon and Soul Edge. She served Soul Edge but she couldn’t claim him, no one could do that without risking insanity. Tira didn’t need to wield Soul Edge to serve him and she was pleased for that. Eiserne Drossel worked just fine for her, its edges still razor-sharp even after countless years of usage.

No, Soul Edge was her king but not her weapon. Tira knew enough to know that she shouldn’t wield the weapon. It would only invite disaster. It was funny, though, to see the people looking for Soul Edge. To destroy it, they say.

Once there had been two men, just a couple of nobody thugs. They had wielded knives and wore the shirts and pants of workmen. They had asked Tira where Soul Edge was, had she seen it. She only smiled back at them.

One of them had seen the ring blade flash. Once. Twice. Then he never saw anything again. Tira had to contain her laughter as he fell backward, his neck slit cleanly. His friend had his mouth open, ready to ask another question as his friend died in front of him. He grabbed his knife and brandished it at Tira. She had cocked her head, smiling, before whirling Eiserne Drossel again. Tira then walked away as the second man fell to the ground, holding at his sliced open gut.

Yes. Eiserne Drossel was her weapon but Soul Edge…she had to serve him. He was her king, not her weapon.
