One moment we talk of the colour of fruit...

Oh, You guysSo every once in a while I go through a phase where the only thing that really relaxes me or makes me feel safe is reading classics and watching costume dramas. Some weird mental tick leftover from childhood I guess (my sister does it too). I'm having a phase right now and generally I go back to the same productions but occasionally ( Read more... )

"Daniella Denby-Ashe"

Oh funny! She narrates a ton of children's audioboooks for BBC Audiobooks. Hee. I recognized the name.

We have a bunch of Gaskell on audio too, maybe I should check out North & South... Oh bummer, we don't have that one on CD and that's probably the only way I'd listen...

Oh cool! I am glad that she has work, and also that she is using her voice for it is quite exquisite. Any good ones? I might have to check some out.

Wives and Daughters is good if you have that one, although it's unfinished, which is sad :( I've never tried Mary Barton or Ruth, but the Cranford stories are quite light hearted and nice I think.

I'm reading the book now though and I'd say if you have an opportunity to get a hold of it I would, it's fab.

I haven't listened to them but they're all a series for middle-grade readers I think, called Ally's World. They look light-hearted and funny.

We have Cranford and Mary Barton on CD, the others only on download. I'm not big on period stuff in general though so...eh.

Well if you're not a fan of period stuff, I would say it's probably not for you. Mary Barton especially because I think it's quite heavy on the political stuff of the time so it's very deep set in the time period.

I read the book before seeing it (it's a thing) and both are very enjoyable and pretty depressing at the same time though there are some character beats that the people in the novel wouldn't do that they do in the adaption. I sort of understand why (listen to the commentary). I haven't seen Denby-Ashe in anything else, but yes, she's wonderful here in a difficult role. And Armitage is just lovely. I mean, really.

And now I want to reread/rewatch...

Sorry, there are lots of things to discuss about the book and the adaption, but my meta is busy procrastinating essay writing.

Are you, seriously though, do you have an icon for ALL THINGS THAT I LOVE? Because I feel like you do.

I'm knee deep in the novel right now and it's sooo good! I spent all yesterday reading and would have done today if I hadn't had to go to work. Commentary! What a fabulous idea! But I think I get a lot of it, there are some very difficult aspects to Margaret's character and Nicholas' especially that I think would not have come over at all well on the screen, no matter how good the acting is. And I think I have even more respect for DDA now that I'm reading the book, she and Armitage are both I think pretty perfect casting.

You should reread/watch and then we can have some proper good meta-talks.

Heh. I have quite a few icons on my harddrive, but only six slots at the moment as my paid account time ran out.

Mmm. I don't remember much about the details, as it was years ago, but yes.

We'll see. :-)
