I forgot to mention a couple things earlier. First was that those are some wicked icicles! I don't think they get that big even in Maine. Not southern Maine anyway. And two, it's hard to believe that those old tracks were were capable of hauling tons of materials from the mine. They look like the tracks from the Indiana Jones movie. The one where they have to get out of the temple thing where people are being sacrificed.
LoL! Those icicles are between a foot and a two feet long. My aunt's house has a corner on it that often gets an icicle well over 5 feet long! O_O; I'm not sure what constitutes a big or small icicle since it seems to depend on the year and the roof. ;)
(Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) Yar - there are ore cart tracks all over Hatchers, though not trestles so much. You can even find ore carts, too, where people haven't managed to take them away. But alas, no signs of sacrifices to Kali.
These are all up in Hatcher Pass: same trestle in clouds in summer Lonesome Mine ore cart Talkeetna Mine ore cart Talkeetna Mine ore cart tracksSorry - I think they are a lot of fun. :D There are tons more up in the Pass that I haven't seen yet, too. The mountains up above where I went snowshoeing are littered with mine shaft entrances, some of which have ore cart tracks (and the carts!). My sister has climbed up there and has photos but not online yet. :\ I am going to see them for myself this summer. I hadn't done it before because it is

Aaaah, sleeping in, my kinda morning. The biggest icicle I saw here this year was about a foot long. It wasn't terribly big around though. There was one really cool ice feature though. The snow on beth's parent's roof slid down on a warm day and cause the icicles to point straight inward towards the house. It looked like a frozen wave, but on a much smaller scale, wrapping around the edge of the roof. Like a wave for little ice pixies or something. It was quite surreal up close and I don't think anyone got photos. Tis a bummer.
If I make it up there will you take me to see the mine? I think that would be the coolest place to look around. I used to play in old barns and stuff when I was kid, ones that hadn't been used in decades. It wasn't safe and I'd obviously never play in the mine, but it would be cool to see the old craftsmanship in person.
Oh, cool, ice waves - yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. Our roof used to do that a bit sometimes, though I don't think the icicles ever quite got horizontal. :)
And of course I'd show you the mines, they aren't very far from Palmer at all. You can actually see Independence Mine from town if you know which dots to look at. ;) Its like a 15 - 20 minute drive there (only that slow because of the slow speed limit up the pass). I always take people there - its one of my top favorite places in the world. :D
