there are a few things on my mind today.

there's one question in particular that's been cling clanging around in my brain since yesterday. when did we become such parker snobs? when did we evolve into look-how-well-read-i-am, check-out-all-the-obscure-music-i-listen-to, i-have-an-opinion-on-everything, i-am-superior-to-you jerks?? i was thinking ( Read more... )

yup.

i really hate how it does seem like at a school so different from others, that stresses community, we constantly have to one-up eachother. The whole obscure music thing bugs me. Granted I have heard a leo kottke song and name one of his albums. but that has nothing to do with it. The whole reading bugs thing bugs me. We all read Perks, we thought we'd be different and cool. We all read High Fidelity, we thought we'd be cool, and different. We all read Fight Club, we thought we'd be cool and different. And low-and-behold everyone read those books. We aren't different. We spout our right wing and left wing views. It's wasted air. It isn't going to change someone else's views. It's true we are snobs. Who feel it is our job to reeducate the world, with our views on music, literature, food, gardening, politics, education, and bullshit. We should get over ourselves.

Sorry, I suppose I needed to get that out of my system too.

and "ahead of the curve" seems to symbolize what parker students want to be.

I'm just saying this because "I have an opinion about everything," but:

Whats wrong with being well read, as long as you enjoy reading?

Whats wrong with listening to obscure music (though I sure as hell don't,) provided that you like listening to it?

Whats wrong with having opinions, if you can back them up?

Whats wrong with wanting to feel intelligent and cultured?
I wish I were.

And I almost forgot. People who come across as snobs are bad at hiding it.

but the thing is, even if they do genuinely enjoy reading or listening to those obscure bands, people WANT other people to know that they listen to certain bands and have read certain books. that's what i'm talking about. that, and the need to prove that you listen to MORE obscure bands and have read MORE critically acclaimed books than all your friends.

I cant believe that exsists nearly as much as you think it does.

Furthermore, I find it funny (and funnier because Im doing it now,) how everyone (esspecially me) seems to think that complaining how bad we are somehow wipes our slates clean, that our being able to recognize our flaws somehow justifys them. THen you have the subconcious use of self-criticism in order to advance our own and others feelings that we are "realistic" and "modest" enough to acknowledge their exsistence.

Wow, Im bitching about people bitching too much. Twisted irony if I ever saw it.

thats what i was thinking. that and i read "perks" waaaay before it was the book to read....and then i realized that i thought that, and laughed. oh, the humanity.

ben, you're right, i know. i certainly dont think that my recognizing that i do it justifies my doing it, it's just i don't know exactly how to change it. and obviously i can't control the fact that everyone else in our school does it too.
i don't want to be a snob. i wish i was not. i'm sorry that i am. but how do i turn it all around now? especially when i spend every day in a community that totally breeds this kind of attitude?
my point is: you're absolutely correct, but what can anyone do about it?

i feel that.

i think i might compete with people anyways (even though i wouldn't really tell them) over how many books i've read. though it seems like it's more about having something to talk about, for me. it's hard to have a one-sided conversation over a book.

but... yeah... parker has a lot of great things going for it, but our attitude (as a school) isn't one of them. though it's not totally related, i really hope that people don't wear their parker t-shirts to bye bye birdie this coming weekend. it's only going to look like we're trying to one-up littleton and i don't think that's the message we want to send.

i'm almost a little ashamed to admit that even i think parker is better than other schools. but that isn't necesarily true...

but but...the whole wearing parker shirts to bye bye birdie is not to one up littleton. I've tried to, you can't argue with littleton people. and i realize that people will take it the wrong way. too bad i say. It's support for zack and eric.

but then again i just re-read your comment, and you're right, it will look like we are. Littleton people will think we are. They think that I'm doing it even when I mention Parker in passing at boyscouts.
