The area of carpet I cut out looks like shit with the patched carpet in place. Any person with sight will walk in and look at it and say to themselves [or aloud] "look, your carpet has patched square".

The dog and I are not on speaking terms.

Patches don't usually work out too well.

If you have massive odor problems elsewhere, you can try to mix up some oxy-clean with warm-to-hot water, and dump that on the spot. You have to get it pretty wet; you want the treatment to reach the pad underneath. The oxidizing action of the potion tends to disable odor molecules. It's not perfect, but it can work if luck is on your side. It's basically a really weak version of something we use professionally.

If your carpet's any darker than a light beige, however, it might lighten the color. Test it in a closet first. Put the stuff on, let it sit till it dries, and check it out.

If you do this too often you run the risk of making a musty spot where the solution has been applied; it just never dries. So don't get too crazy.

Or, just mail the dog to TyB. Problem solved.

Wait. You actually cut a square out of the carpet? I know you said it before but I assumed what you actually meant was you pulled up the entire carpet. Oh dear. Yeah, that won't look like regular carpet anymore. Oh well, replacing carpet isn't that expensive--or maybe this is the excuse you need to go wood or something. But maybe wait until the dog passes away first.

Once when we came back from vacay, when we slept on our bed I could smell cat piss coming from the floor under the bed. There was a HUGE thunderstorm when we were gone and they usually hide out there. They must have been so scared what with the storm AND being left alone that they squirted. Cat pee smell is the worst.

I attacked the shit out of it with Dr. Bronners peppermint soap of all things. I don't know. When you put your nose right up against the carpet the smell is still kind of there, but I couldn't smell it from the bed anymore which is the main thing I guess. snooks is the expert though. Try what he says. And don't cut any more holes in the carpet!!!

I just spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find all the places Diego peed in my office. Everytime I sat at my desk I just kept smelling cat pee. It was terrible. He's been getting sick off and on. Literally - he has pee problems, we take him to the vet drop $200, he gets better. He starts throwing up his food all day, take him to the vet, drop $200, he gets better. Not in a couple of days mind you, no - that same day, which means either there's something really wrong or he just likes the vet. He had blood tests which were fine, now they want stool sample which means more cash.

At any rate, he really likes peeing in the plants and we recently brought in our plants from outside for the winter. And so began Pee-Fest 2008. I finally realized that he had peed so much on this one plant that the ceramic bottom was just coated. Once I washed that and everything around it, my office is finally starting to return to normal.

But yeah, don't cut any more carpet up. You're just going to end up with a checkerboard of a room.

If you have a blacklight hanging around from your time in the '80s, it's a good way to find cat piss. Wait till it's dark, then plug it in and point the light around. If you find anything that glows kind of greenish, it's piss.

If you find white streaks all over the walls and your desk, that would be me. Ignore that.
