Summary: They both know the pain of Samhain, as loss. Can it be made better?
Severus prowled the edge of the dark woods, searching for someone he knew was just as affected by Halloween as he was. They had planned to have a Samhain ritual on the night the dead came closest to earth. They had decided to wear masks, and Severus went so far as to wear his old Death Eater mask as a sign of contrition. Plus, Harry found it a turn on.
There was a leap of colour through the tree, a contained fire, a cauldron. There was Harry wearing not a mask but a black, translucent veil. And there was Lily, looking up through a Pensieve, more magic than even Dumbledore could achieve. Lily seemed so close and so achingly real.
“Come quick,” Harry said, “Mum’s only come for one reason.”
They blessed the four directions and five elements together; felt the night press down upon them.
“Ready?” came Lily’s echoing, distant voice.
Harry produced a box and opened it for his fiancé. The October wind whistled through the trees. Smirking, Severus toyed with his own ring for Harry. Harry was staring at the movement in Severus’ pocket.
And so Lily Potter gave away her son to Severus Snape. All was well.
