Nigel could already tell he was going to like Professor Lupin a lot. Especially that constant hair color change-y thing he did. It helped keep Nigel's mind from wandering too long, a bad habit he'd inherited from his mother. It was rare that Nigel actually enjoyed a lecture. His good feelings quickly faded when it came to the assignment part of the day...

Nigel sat squirming in his seat nervously as he waited to receive his matches. He didn't want to have to do a transfiguration spell in front of all of these other kids!!! What if he messed up (which was highly likely) and made a huge fool of himself (which was also highly likely).

[OOC: You had to pick matches XD You know that no matter what Nigel+Matches=FIRE right XD;;;]

The second he had to sit down among the Gryffindors, Marius was pretty sure he was going to die. He tried his very best to concentrate on looking unimpressed instead of shooting longing looks at the mass of Hufflepuffs on the other side of the class, but the sudden appearance of the hippogryff blew all chances of looking unaffected away. Marius grew rather more certain of his impending doom.

And then the professor announced that they'd be given matches. Marius's gaze slid to Nigel and he wondered if he'd have enough time to owl his Mother about what kind of funeral he'd prefer. "Do try to be careful," he whispered to Nigel, and started furiously composing his letter while waiting for that other Weasley kid to bring over what he was sure would be the obejcts of his demise.

"I will!!!" Nigel responded nervously to Marius, not angry in the least that his housemate was insinuating that Nigel's magical skills were so subpar that they might put the entire class in danger. Nigel felt the same way!

He hunkered down in his chair, trying to make himself look as small as possible. Maybe if he laid low he wouldn't have to do anything.

Marius watched as the Potter kid drew nearer and wondered if hiding would help keep the Weasley away. Then he saw Nigel trying and decided against that course of action. Instead, he sat as tall and proudly as he could and said, imperiously, "Trying to make yourself invisible won't do you any good." Then, afraid that had sounded too friendly, he added, "He'd better give me a good one. If not, I'm switching with you."

All throughout Teddy's speech, Al had a hard time keeping the smile to himself. It was so weird, he decided, to see his practically-second-older-brother up there, being a Professor, teaching. Admittedly, he was worried he was going to have a hard time taking the older boy seriously, because how many times have the lot of them gotten into trouble, and Teddy had to use his smooth charm to get them out of it? This was the boy who'd turn his nose into a pigs whenever he felt teary when he was younger. It was hard to imagine he'd be his Professor.

But listening to him now, Al couldn't help but feel a surge of pride. He was really doing alright, and though he'd never met them, he just knew that Teddy's parents would be so proud ( ... )

She'd been impressed by the hippogriff, and entertained by the changing hair color, so all in all the class hadn't seemed bad ... until the match bit.

Kat regarded her match skeptically. At least it vaguely had the shape of a needle, right? So that was a start? But needles were metal. Matches were wood. How on earth did one become the other?

Oh, right. Magic.

She consulted her book for the appropriate wand motion and word, but no way was she going first. Someone else was going to have to kick them off.

Rose smiled a bit as she waited for Al to hand her the match she was to work with. She had heard the story of her mum's first match-to-needle transformation a few times, and she hoped she would be as good as her genes dictated.

She looked at her book, then at the match Al had given her. She glanced up at Teddy, who was smiling down at her, raised her wand and cleared her throat. A few others turned to look at the noise, and Rose began the incantation.

Scorpius was transfixed. Professor Lupin? Was very cool. A metamorphagus. Why was no one else amazed by this? Did they not know just how rare it was?

No, he thought. They probably don't.

Pulling his attention away from Prof. Lupin's (neon) hair, Scorpius concentrated on the match that Al had given him instead. He picked it up from his desk and examined it carefully, scrutinizing the imperfections in the sliver of wood and the irregularities in the red and white blob on the end. Ignoring a niggling question (Why are we using Muggle tools in our first magic class??), he replaced the match on his desk and stared at it while he flicked his wand.

A silver match.

Hmm. Not quite.
