Would have been nice to have a form letter, but if they were planning on an illustrated version, the publisher's don't want the bullshit hassle of being sued. She just might not have gotten it or might not be allowed to acknowledge seeing it on the advice of the publisher's legal team.
Oh, I know it. I just used to work on an author's official message board and her publishers had some very specific rules about things that might infringe on copyright because the laws don't protect authors concerning their original content if they endorse fanfiction, and I am assuming there is also fear of fan art to a point. Not as prevalent, but if they are going to do the exact same thing with a professional artist, there is the fear that it won't be protected by the law either
