This chapter is so utterly terrifying, especially on the first read. I remember thinking that no one was safe, not even Hermione, and since Bellatrix has tortured people to insanity in the past, I was freaking out almost as much as Ron was. That, and Ron's reaction is just so heartbreaking. You can really tell how much Hermione means to him. :( :( :(
By the end of the chapter - well, just wow. Such a roller coaster ride! I was hyperventilating the first time around, and it didn't help that it was about four/five in the morning and I'd been really excited for the book all day. Dobby's death was so wrenching.
The inhabitants of Malfoy Manor are so focused on Harry, Ron, and Hermione in this chapter that they miss a fascinating sideshow - that is, the actions of Draco Malfoy. Not only is he hesitant to approach Harry, but he also basically refuses to identify Ron and Hermione. You have to wonder what’s going on in his mind; he’s spent so much time with the trio over the past six years that there’s almost no question that he knew exactly who they were the moment he first laid eyes on them, yet he acts incredibly uncertain about it all. Meanwhile his parents are beside themselves with excitement over the opportunity to hand Harry over to Voldemort and get back in his good graces. Why wouldn’t Draco, who we’ve hardly ever seen doing anything but parroting his parents beliefs, feel any differently
( ... )
I also found it interesting that Lucius, who is upstairs, can hear Dobby Disapparate with Dean and Luna but just minutes earlier, Draco couldn't hear Dobby Apparate into the cellar even though he would have still been in the cellar himself.
I'm not sure if JKR did that intentionally or the Manor just has some sort of crazy acoustics where you can't here what's happening a few feet away but you can hear what's happening in another room.
Yeah I was wondering about that, too, but I figured maybe because he was busy making his won noise carrying Griphook up the stairs? He was also just not in a state to care, to be honest.
-interesting how Wormtail’s wand seems to be working better for Ron than the blackthorn was for Harry…go Ron! -whoa, triple Stupefy! -DOBBY NOOOOOOO! :,( The first time I read this, I totally cried.
So, you've got Draco wanting to be good and wanting out of the Death Eaters, and you've got Dobby dead, and you've got Bellatrix goin' all "Imma torture you, hermy-one" (Because she totally wouldn't know how to pronounce her name) I hated that Dobby died, and I cried, but I loved this chapter because so much happens and there are so many people involved and it was just fun to read, looking back.
