The first time she saw him, there on the upper landing of Flourish and Blotts, she thought he was probably the most beautiful boy that she had ever seen. His grey eyes seemed to pierce through her when he gazed at her. He smirked as he caught her staring and she knew then he was one she'd always remember.

The first time he disappointed her was that same day in that very same shop. And as he watched their fathers' fight he gave her a wink, and she knew then he was one she'd want to hate but never could.

She stood idly by, watching as he tormented her brother and Harry. As he tormented himself. There were days she would come across him by himself, his blonde head in his hands. She didn't dare speak, afraid of the words that would tumble from her mouth, or the acid insults that would drip from his.

But how she wanted to comfort that boy! To be the one he'd come to lean on, and she'd whisper saccharine coated nothings as she stroked his hair. Believing he was just as lost as she.

The first time they kissed, there before the entrance to the dungeons after the Yule Ball, she thought his lips were probably the softest she'd ever felt. His hands wrapped gently around her waist as he took her breath away.

The first time he broke her heart was after they had made love. She lay there in his arms, wrapped in Slytherin green sheets, when he told her they couldn't be together. That she was an embarassment.

She stood idly by as he drifted farther away from school and friends. And, though she didn't know it then, he drifted farther away from sanity. There was a sadness and anger that seemed to radiate off of him. And he pushed away all who tried to get close.

And how she wanted to forget that boy! To finally free her heart from his grasp, and step away from all that he meant to her.

The last time she saw him she stood frozen to the spot and she thought her eyes were deceiving her. And then he gazed at her with those grey orbs that had always been her downfall and as he walked past without a word she knew her heart would always be his.

The last time she told him goodbye was early Spring. They laid him to rest beside his father as a steady rain began to fall, soaking her Mourning robes, pasting them to her skin. All the light from his tortured soul extinguished at last. And she knew then that her world was over.
