"You sure you don"t want to come with?" Harry asked, standing from the towel and moving to Ginny. Hermione and Ron both shook their heads. Harry sighed and walked off, Ginny waving the ice cream money around and talking loudly about deciding between Rainbow Sherbet and Strawberry.
Ron flopped back on his towel, letting the cool ocean breeze riffle through his hair. He wiggled his toes into the sand and smiled at Hermione. "I love sand," he said.
Hermione flicked a bit at him before lying beside him. "I don't. It always sticks to me. Very annoying. I like the waves." She pointed to the water. There was a huge wave coming and Ron jumped up, tugging Hermione down to it.
"Come on, Hermione. Let's ride the waves!"
She laughed but allowed Ron to pull her. The beach was rather empty. The only people in seeing distance were down very far, so Hermione didn't mind that Ron was yelling like a madman about the freezing cold water. If people had been around she would have made him shush.
By the time they got far enough into the water, the big wave Ron wanted to ride was gone, but they floated there, waiting for another. The water was cold and Ron shivered slightly.
"Hey, look!" he yelled in excitement, pointed in the distance. The wave coming in looked very promising. He grinned at her and snatched her hand out of the salty water. "Ready?"
Hermione nodded and then the wave was over them. At the turn of the wave, Hermione spluttered, spitting out the bitter saltwater from her mouth. Ron was rolling in the water, chuckling at her. He reached out and pulled out a bit of seaweed stuck in her hair, getting a whiff of her flowery perfume even through the overpowering ocean water.
"That was refreshing," he announced, letting his fingers fall away from Hermione's face.
"Yes, it was. Now excuse me while I choke over the water." And she proceeded to do just so. Ron rubbed her back, kicking her every now and then while trying to keep afloat. "Gah. I'm better, now."
Then another wave tossed over them. "Let's go back to shore," Ron said, indicating Harry and Ginny, each carrying two ice creams. "They got our ice cream cones."
As they walked back, Hermione slipped her hand into Ron's. He smiled and blushed, taking the ice cream with his left. When half of the chocolate treat fell to the sand, he didn't mind much, because Hermione's hand was still in his.
