If you continue knitting a flat scarf, rather than going into the round, I second the "Knit One, Purl One" pattern on every row. If you are knitting one row and then purling the next row, you will end up with stockinette stitch (all knitting on one side and purls on the other side) and it will not lay flat. It will curl up.

I knit my first HP scarf in the round (only knits, round and round and round) on circular needles with a fairly short cable. I think they were 16"? Your mileage may vary, though.

I will definitely make those chanes. I think I might continue with the straight needles, because I'm super broke for another week, then I can pick up more yarn and circular needles next week for future projects. :)
