By special request, I have created a new community called projectofdoom as a sister site to hp_paperpiecing. This is a place for you to share, talk and ask questions about The Project of Doom

Better yet, teach her to sew so she can help, lol! Mr. G was close to 2 when I taught him to stitch on plastic canvas with yarn. He loved it because he got to "sew" with momma!
Thank you Jennifer for creating a place where we can all discuss PoD. Even though we are almost done with the piecing of the blocks, I know my questions are really only just beginning as I start to stitch my titles and then eventually start the quilting process so, I think it is a perfect time to start the new community :0)
Hi - So I just came upon your site and getting ready to do this quilt. I do have a question though... I think that I have figured out that it is going to be a bookshelf quilt and I want to be consistent on the background... How much fabric is going to be needed as the background? Thanks and I can't wait to get started.... Not only am I going to make this quilt for my son who is heading off to college in a year, but we have been collecting fat quarter for years of ones he has liked and I am going to make them the books and stuff as an I spy.
Each week's block will be 10 1/2" unfinished. The approximate finished size is 60" x 76".
Some notes about fabric - You will need the same background fabric throughout the entire quilt, and I recommend something neutral, a tone on tone beige, gray or similar, that will make the block designs stand out. The working estimate for the background fabric is 2 1/2 yards. That leaves a lot of wiggle room for mistakes and hopefully room for your own style of paper piecing. All other fabrics for the actual blocks will be small amounts and they will change with each week's block. Hopefully, those are things you'll be able to pull from your stash. This quilt will use approximately 1 yard of sashing fabric and 1 yard of border fabric, but I recommend you wait on that until you see how your blocks turn out to decide what you want.
