Mmm, that is amazing. All the innocent sounds and smells are so claustrophic and menacing, you get a real impression of them living in fear, and you have such a feeling of unease throughout. I love the little details like Harry apparently being sensitive to Voldemort already, and the way he gets hold of Dumbledore's beard.
And I didn't say it, but you can't have too much Sirius *g*
Too... too much Sirius? *faints in shock at the existence of such a thing*
Thanks. :) I had fun with all the metaphor in this one, though on re-reading I think I was a tad heavy-handed at the beginning. I think Harry's sensitivity had more to do with him sensing the influence on James than any previous connection to Voldemort -- though I've always thought Lily can't have been the first person to die for a family member with the killing curse, so I think there is something there.
Yes, I think I expressed it badly. Harry's reaction to James was interesting because the reader knows of the later Voldemort sensitivity. It's a nice memorable touch.
Oh, wonderful! I especially loved the final scene, James looking at Sirius and choosing Peter as more disposable. The feeling of persecution was also very well done. Great fic! :-)
Nim, I really loved this - the sense of fear and unease that pervades it, the way Harry reacts to James. I love the tension in it, the fear within the everyday household setting, and the sense of distancing within, of James trying to hide what's happening to him.
And I just love the way you snuck Sirius in there! And then made James choose him over Peter, and I suspect you made him choose Sirius over Lily and Harry as well, to keep him safe.
Whimper. From the non-verb clause the weight of a thick afghan thief to his breath that said more than any verb, you had me. God, I can imagine that James's last days felt exactly like that.
