Tonks, of course, was of the opinion that you couldn’t trust her younger cousin as far as you could throw him. Not that there was anything wrong with that; didn’t stop him being a plenty amiable person… never mind the distinctly swanky air or insufferable parents. Neither of those, Tonks supposed, was his fault. He’d done good things for the Order, so of course there was no real reason to dislike him. Besides, they'd barely talked at all, despite the fact that during the last years of the war they'd faught side by side. Maybe his character wasn't an unsettlingly accurate copy of Auntie Cissa's (though all accounts from Harry spoke to the contrary). Might as well make the jugement for herself.

Today, partly because she was meeting Malf -- Draco, and partly because she just felt like a change (she'd gone with pink hair for the past week), her features were distinctly pointy, her skin pale and her hair white-blond. She might have been a dead ringer for her aunt if it wasn't for the fact that said hair was short and spiky ( ... )

Draco had to admit that never in his life had he been more startled by a person appearing on his doorstep. He had expected to see his cousin Tonks, had known she had appeared but this ... this woman couldn't possibly be Nymphadora Tonks, the Auror. There was absolutely no way because he'd been told that Tonks always either had amazingly shockingly bright hair or mousy brown hair and he had seen her with both hairstyles. The woman standing on his doorstep looked exactly like his mother and for a moment he gaped at her and whispered, almost inaudibly, "Mum ( ... )

A moment's pause for concentration, her eyes shutting tightly in a strained expression, and Tonks's features softened. Her face turned a more familiar heart-shape and her eyes (which had been blue) became dark and glittering. She kept the blond spikes, however. She laughed when she saw Draco's expression. "I'm sorry, that was really horrid of me. Just thought I was due for a bit of a change, you know? I could do pink if you like, but it's just I've had that for about a week now. Wouldn't want to get stuck in a rut or anything. Although," she tilted her head, as if inviting comment, "I don't think I make a very good blonde. Do you?"

She stepped inside. "I've been alright, all things considered. It's complete chaos at the Ministry. Apparently, Scrimgeour's decision with this whole pardon business came completely out of the blue. Memos going around like mad..." Tonks took off her cloak and handed it to Draco. "Thanks. And anyway, I should stop boring you. What have you been doing lately? Haven't heard much from your end of things."

Draco almost sighed with relief as he watched Tonks silently shift back into an appearance he was far more used to seeing her wear. He couldn't even begin to explain the feeling that had taken residence in him when he'd seen her looking so much like his mother but it was disconcerting and he didn't want to feel it again.

"No, the blonde's fine," he said, eying her thoughtfully. "I think it rather suits you ... although it would look better longer." It wasn't even subtle and he knew it but, then again, he didn't think Tonks would pay much attention to his suggestion. To his knowledge, she never had.

He took her cloak and turned, placing it in the hall closet before turning back to find her already standing in the middle of his kitchen, pouring steaming hot liquid into two cups that he was sure hadn't been sitting out when he'd answered the door. He considered asking her what she was doing; dismissed the idea quickly. He didn't really mind after all and Tonks had always seemed to know exactly how he liked his coffee ( ... )
