Travel routes that DO NOT make sense...

I often wondered why on earth is there multiple highways getting in and out of almost every major city in the United States... allowing the traveler the ease of connecting to another major city... all except Hartford and Providence.

Yeah, there are many canceled interstate routes, and the Providence to Hartford connection is one. If you look at a map, you can see four distinctive stretches of the road that were completed and are open:

From West to East:
1) I-384 in Manchester
2) US6 around Willimantic
3) The I-395/US6 connector (officially I-695, but it's unsigned) near the RI/CT border
4) US6/RI-10 (Historic RI-195) from downtown Providence west to I-295

If you look at all four, you'll note that they do line up... and I agree, it's a shame they didn't build this (like many other) roadways, but a good deal were canceled in the late 60s and early 70s when the evidence of the destructiveness of interstate development on cities and the environment was beginning to emerge.
