She didn’t have a clue that the war had started until the books began to burn.
It happened slowly. At first, she thought the smoke was merely dust risen from some of the neglected novels; vowing, as she went to bed, to dust the next day.
She awoke to flames, slowly devouring the pages whole, ages and ages of knowledge devoured by a mind that would retain no wisdom.
She cried, but the water didn’t put out the flames.
She ran to McGonagall, vaguely surprised to see her sitting in the Headmaster’s chair.
“The death of a book?”
“Book suicide.”
