Ginny looked out the window, seeing nothing but a landscape of smooth, undisturbed snow. No heroes or bright-eyed boys or even a ragtag bunch of kids was in sight. Sighing, she wrapped the afghan closer around herself, her vision shifting to the reflection of the room behind her, warmed by cheerful firelight. Her mum came in from the kitchen and straightened a doily, picked up an empty plate, and then looked over at her.
Strong hands rested on Ginny’s shoulders as her mum turned her away from the window. “The waiting is easier if you don’t watch,” she said softly.
