Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

A year ago today (July 21) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released into the world, bringing to an end (at least for now) arguably the most beloved book series in the history of literature.  Looking back on all seven masterfully-crafted books, there are still so many questions to ask and answer and so many avenues to explore.  That is what ( Read more... )

Okay, okay, i've always thought that there's totally a missing moment, well...A missing extension of the already canon moment I guess. When Harry is given detention by Umbridge, and she makes him use that quill. It would be so interesting from her point of view. Shes described in such disgusting ways in the book- like a toad, and her horrible wide grin and sharp teeth. God she makes me shudder. But it'd be good to get inside her head. Maybe be she had a special preoccupation with Harry- didnt she have a picture of him in her office with a little bit saying 'He must be punished' or something? Maybe thats my imagination, but it certainly sounds to me like she had a special preoccupation for him. Sounds interesting to me.

Sounds pretty interesting. The thought of getting inside Umbridge's head is terrifyingly sick, but you should go ahead and write the story. We take all sorts of stories here with only two limitations: It has to be canon-based and it has to be R-rated or less. I don't think your idea is too far off, based on her office in DH, where she does have a picture of Harry. It is obvious that she hated him before she even met him since she sicced the Dementors on him that summer before 5th year. When you get the story written, send it in! I'd love to have it.

I really should have done this much earlier, because since I first came across this comm, I've though it a brilliant idea as I simply adore canon-based fics. I do have lots of recs I'd love to contribute, but I'm a little confused by this line:

For our purposes, I would like to define it as a story based upon an actual line written in the canon. This can be a tiny little reference, or it can be a line that gives a huge amount of history in one fell swoop. But the story must be based upon that line.

Does that mean that the canon-based line has to be actually quoted in the story itself somewhere? I'm guessing not, since you just recced a fic of mine that only quoted the line in the summary.

But how about fics which don't actually state in summary or fic its canon basis, yet are clearly set in a missing moment time frame? Would they be what you are looking for too?

Thanks for asking about this definition. I am constantly looking for ways to improve the text on the site to make it more clear, and I appreciate your question. The line does not have to be quoted or referenced anywhere; and in fact, it doesn't even matter if it is classified as a "Missing Moments" story anywhere by the author. If I can find some basis for the story in the actual canon, then I'll use it (if it's well-written and fits the other standards in terms of rating). So, for example, say there is a story about Ginny throwing away the diary in Chamber of Secrets. There may not be the actual quote from the book since she never talks about it herself, but I can certainly find it, from Tom's statement in the Chamber, and I'll go ahead and use the story, sticking in the quote in the header for the link. But I am rather fussy. Just today, in fact, I decided against using a good story that was from Ginny's point of view after Harry broke up with her after DD's funeral. It was cute and Tonks came up to her and they talked about ( ... )
