Draco's "Dark Mark" moltobene1925 July 16 2005, 10:07:15 UTC
Does anyone think that Harry's assumption that Draco has taken the Dark Mark is correct? I agree with Hermione about the age thing, and whatever his assignment is that was mentioned in Ch 2 could be his way of proving himself before hand. I just don't see a 16 year old already a DE (Death Eater)

I'm not sure. It would be rather foolish, wouldn't it? I mean, any of the teachers could lift up his sleeve and see it or he could get in a row with someone and his sleeve could get ripped or pushed up.

But then maybe Voldemort wanted him to have that bit of paranoia. It could also be a thing of loyalty: would you go into Hogwarts, surrounded by enemies, wearing where your loyalties lie right on you arm?

Blaise Zabini moltobene1925 July 16 2005, 10:18:43 UTC
This is just a general question:

Since this was the first time that JKR has even introduced us to Zabini since his sorting in SS, what was your impression of him?

I liked him. Yes, he was all "Yea Purebloods!" but his attitude could go wither way. He didn't much seem like the DE type, but more prissy and vain. I hope we see more of him, I think he's interesting, especially with the brief summary of his mother. So, no father to influence him apparently. I also liked the way he held his own with Draco and isn't his lacky a la Crabbe and Goyle. The way he informed Draco that he would not be getting an invitation to join the Slug Club was refreshing. I liked seeing a Slytherin that didn't automaticly bow to Draco because of his name and/or father.

Can i just say that Draco not just punching Harry, but (quote) "stamping" on his face jarred me out of happy fanon!draco land. oh yeah, draco is bad, evil, harry's nemisis all came rushing back to me. that was just wrong, and a bit on the excessively violent side.

I liked it that it showed his capability for cruelty. Also, the fact that when he saw Harry he didn't immeadately jump up to do something about it showed that he is more cunning than JKR has let on before. Yes, always has been an evil little git, but now he's showing that he can be calculating as well. If he had jumped on Harry right at the moments Harry had suspected he had been spotted than it would have been a fair fight. By taking Harry unawares he got the advantage over him.

It shows that he is also coming into his own as an adult (although an evil one) because he didn't need anyone else around to do it for/with him a la Crabbe and Goyle.

Absolutely true, if not a bit depressing. I flung off my I ♥ malfoy shirt last night cause i was pissed at that part!

You have a "I ♥ Malfoy" shirt?

*is green with jealousy*

I think in fanon we often forget that Draco is first and foremost Harry's enemy. I know I do. Instead of complete hatred in fics the authors replace it with animosity or merely dislike for one another. When you go two years without a new book and have fanfic as a placebo it can become rather confusing.

Draco's treatment of Harry terrified me. Admittedly, he's spent the past few years riding home as a slug, but...to stamp on someone's face seemed crueller than I'd imagined Draco could be. He always seemed to not want to get his hands dirty.

I'm surprised a good Bat-Bogey Hex was enough for Ginny to get into the club. I would like Sluggy (I prefer Sluggy, because if I go for his real name I end up with Slugworth - too many years reading Roald Dahl) better if he wasn't so obvious with his loyalties. I wondered if his dislike of Draco was just a means to distance himself from DEs or if he truly felt Draco talentless.

I think it was more to distance himself from the DEs. After all, with Lucius in Azkaban it makes Draco useless as a connection. As an enemy of the MoM he isn't exactly someone the Slug would want to associate with.

Cruelty is different than pure evil. I can see Draco doing it, and the "not getting his hands dirty" bit....

*smiles*

he didn't, technically.

I ♥ evil!Draco.

Draco's action just seemed to come so out of left field. Even with the Inquisition Squad, he didn't do very much at all, not to the extent of actual physical violence. I thought wandless combat was looked down upon as "Muggle". :D
