Amelia Bones moltobene1925 July 16 2005, 07:07:31 UTC
Alright, I just finished the first chapter and had to get this all up and running so the ranting and raving can begin. I know a lot of people thought that Amelia Bones would be the next Minister of Magic when JKR said that Fudge was being replaced. I was one of the people that thought she was a possibility. I loved her in OotP even though her spot was brief. I just can't believe that as soon as page 13 there was already character death. I wonder if JKR will show this affecting Susan Bones (Hufflepuff) because A. Bones was her (I think) aunt or great aunt.

Harry Potter Lexicon has already update some of it's info to match HBP's new canon, one of the things benig the death of Amelia Bones.

Just thought that was interesting.

she was a member of the Order. she was described as a stately-looking witch in green and that is, as far as i know, all we know about her.

Did anyone else like how the two worlds worked together? It made me smile how the Minister of Magic just shows up and says all of this stuff and expects them to believe it and walks out. the whole interaction between the two ministers (well, one ex minsister) is great.

I really loved this chapter--imho, the best first chapter of any of the HP books. It put everything into context, with a sense of humor and lots of fun. I especially liked the part where he asked why the previous PM hadn't informed him, and Fudge gives him this WTF response. Like, who'd believe him, right?

I liked that it showed how it worked and that it was only the minister who knew about wizards. I had wondered since PoA how it worked when Fudge told Harry that they do have contacts in the muggle world for events like Sirius' escape.

I was shocked at the deaths in this chapter, especially since it was one of the few (if any?) mentions of them. Two incredibly important witches dead with no real reaction from the wizarding world.

Also, on this first impression, I liked Scrimgeour. He seemed more take-charge than Fudge.

I liked him too but my only problem was he was undermining the potential harm for muggles.

I liked A. Bones too, that's why it shocked me so much.

am i the only one who thought this chapter was a bit busy and pointless? maybe i read it too quickly, but i just wasn't interested in the muggle pm stuff. she could have introduced scrimgeour in a quicker manner, i thought. but the deaths were definitely sad.

No. I agree that it seemed busy, I had difficulty keeping the tenses straight, although I don't think it was completely pointless. We learn how widespread the violence has become, that it's beyond the MoM's control to keep quiet, and we are introduced to the new MoM and how far he is willing to go to protect authority figures, being that he has placed Kigsley Shacklebolt in the employ of the Prime Minister without his knowledge in order to better guard him. Obviously we are also introduced to the new Minister of Magic as well as the lengths that muggles will go to to ignore magic (the painting). I don't much like Scrimgeour's style, but that's for a latter chapter. I am most curious about the significance of his appearance, particularly why she chose a lion to represent him.
