Rules and Frequently Asked Questions
aka all you need to know

• What is a Big Bang?
It depends on the community. It's agreed that Big Bangs are challenges over a few months where writers write a certain amount of words and an artist claims the fic to make art to accompany it.

• So what's a Reverse Big Bang?
A reverse big bang is one where an artist makes art first and then a writer claims the art to write a fic for it.

• What are the requirements?
Artists will be required to make one piece of art that is either digital, a drawing, a fanvideo or a fanmix. Writer's will be required to write a 10,000 word fic to accompany the piece of art. For more details see the specific section.

• How do I sign up?
The sign up post will be linked on the sidebar.

Artists

• So, what do I need to know if I want to do art?
First of all, you need to be able to make either a digital piece of art, a drawing, a fanvideo or a fanmix. Each of these have different requirements and will require you to put a fair amount of work into them.

Digital and drawings must be at least 1000px all together so 500x500 or 400x600 or whatever as long as they're that big. They need to be completed works. No sketches allowed.

Fanvideos need to be at least 1 minute and 30 seconds long.

Fanmixes need to be at least 8 songs and include a cover for the front and back which needs to be at least 300x300. All songs should be in a zip file when turned in so the writer can download it.

• Can I make multiple pieces?
Artists may have have up to separate pieces. If you want to include two pieces of art that go together then they will go to the same artist. So, artists can have two "entries."

• Can I create a piece of crossover art?
No. At this time we're keeping it strictly Harry Potter.

• Is there a rating limit?
Nope. You can make anything from G-rated gen art to NC-17. The only rule is that all participants in sexual acts must be at least 16 years old.

• Will you be posting my art?
Mods will save and upload the art to imgur so that we can post for claims but after that, it's the artist's job to post the art.

Writers

• What should I know about being a writer for the big bang?
You will be claiming a piece of art and writing a 10,000 word story that accompanies it. While we understand that writing can sometimes get away from us, please be sure that you focus on the art for your story. You will be writing for the art.

All fics will need to be beta-ed. If you do not have a personal one, we will help you to find one through the big bang.

• How will claims work?
A few days before claiming opens, we will be posting a list of the art that we have received so that you can look over it. When claiming opens, there will be a post that authors can claim work for on a first-come, first-serve basis.

• I'm already writing a fic. Can I use that?
No. No matter how closely it may resemble the art, please start a new story.

• Will more than one author be claiming art/can I claim more than one piece of art?
We're going to hold off on answering this until we see how many artists/writers sign up. We're going to try to make sure that each art is claimed once before authors claim more than one.

• Can I have a co-author?
No.

• What are checkins?
Checkins are how we know that you're still here and to let us know if you need any help. We'll make a post and you can either choose to or not (for the not required checkins) check in and tell us how you're doing.

• What does art due mean?
It means that we have to have art that's basically done. It doesn't need to be completely finished but it must be enough that we can pass on to a writer and have them work with it. After that, you're more than welcome to complete it before final art is due.

• Will you grant extensions?
We'll look at it by a case by case basis but if we do grant an extension then we will need to see what you're working on to know if you'll be able to finish in time. Best to not need one.

• What if I need to drop out?
As an artist, that's completely fine. You can let us know at the checkin or the post with rough draft information. As an author, please let us know ASAP because your artist is going to be wanting a fic! We'll have to find a pinch hitter so please email us as soon as you know you have to drop out.

Posting

• How will posting work?
Artists and authors will have to be in touch with each other so that art and fic can get posted to the community. Artists will be responsible for posting their art and authors for posting their fic and one will make a master post in the community on their assigned posting date.

• Can I show people a few days early?
No. Please do not show anybody but your beta/cheerleader/artist/author before it's time. The unveiling should happen on your posting date.

• What if my fic is too large for one post?
You are welcome to split it into separate posts or host it somewhere off livejournal like ao3 or dreamwidth.

• Where can I upload my graphics?
We recommend imgur or tinypic.

• How will I contact my author/artist?
We will give you their information when it's time.

If you still have questions, you're more than welcome to post below! A mod will get back to you ASAP.
